The best local history museum in Australia? I visited Kapunda on Dec 30th, 2023, to see its resident 'Big Thing', Map the Miner. I decided to stop by the Historical Society Museum beforehand. The museum was only $5 to enter and I was provided with an overview of the place by two helpful volunteers. The museum itself is spread over two floors, and has multiple rooms. It contains approximately 20,000 artifacts from the 1800's to modern times, including stamps/currency, clothing, household goods (e.g., early fridges, radios), hospital equipment (e.g., an early surgery table), and vehicles (e.g., a old town ambulance and hearse). There are also reconstructions of an old shop, classroom, church, and home. Included in the price are smaller two museums next door, with one centred on the war and one centred on the Kapunda mine. Whilst this museum contains artifacts from Kapunda, they are artifacts that could have been common throughout Australia, so you do not need to be a local to enjoy this truly impressive museum.

Lost of local history. $5 entry. They have a lot of old things in here! The main room is filled with old fashion, sporting memorabilia, rocks form the mine. The outside has lots of old machinery. The have some rooms set up as displays of and 1800s bedroom and kitchen. The staff are very helpful

One of the most amazing museums I have ever seen! Allow at least 2-3 hours to have a proper look, there is so much to take in. Pay by cash if you can $5 for adults, $2 for kids. Peter, a volunteer was so helpful and guided us around. There is a dvd to watch, very entertaining and interesting how Kapunda became a mining town. We will definitely be back as I’m sure we missed a lot.

This is the best museum I have had the pleasure of spending nearly 3 hours. It encapsulates all things Kapunda. Congratulations to the volunteers. Thankyou from a seventy year old ex farmer and history lover.

Great slice of history and happy welcoming staff. Having $5 per adult cash on hand helps them. There was so much to see and the building itself was magnificent.

What an amazing historical experience this museum is, especially when Ross Vogt and Rozanne are present to provide expert commentary on life in Kapunda and surrounds.

We went as a family and we all had a good time looking at the items. Hidden treasure and could have spent ages there. The person was full of information and kid friendly

Barossa & Light Cab Service is proud to be the first reviewer here on Google, and it is with great pleasure we give Kapunda Historical Society Museum 5 out of 5 stars, because the museum is hosed in a 1866 magnificent Baptist Church, with a huge collection, that covers every facet of Kapunda's history with extensive displays of agricultural machinery and historical vehicles. Group tours, self guided tours, and mine walking tours are all available. .
