Leeke Homestead

Great place to weather a storm. Low security (may need to jimmy a window open), but better than being caught in the elements. I can attest to Mason Hell-Cat’s review (see below or above this as the case may be). 5 stars! Hope it’s managed to weather the metaphorical storm of a downturn in fortunes for the island…

This was the perfect place for some mates and I to shelter in during an intense thunderstorm in Dec 1995.
Back then, the resort was operating in full 1990s unashamed glory. On this particular day we had decided to walk to the lighthouse 🎶 and I think we made it… but on the way back, coming on dusk, a massive thunderstorm erupted. Lightning so bright and ferocious that it lit up the darkened skies. As rain started pelting down we went up onto the deck of the homestead and waited for it to pass. We carefully eased up the window and climbed inside. Outside peacocks cried out at the heavens. A large rooster jumped off the roof. Mayhem.
With only the light from a very dim torch and the outside lightning, we found the homestead’s guestbook and signed it on behalf of Bob Hawke and Dame Edna Everage.
After half an hour we climbed back out the window and returned to the resort. Great stay. Would recommend.

Great hike out here. Lots of history and views along the journey.
