Heathcote Cemetery

This is a great, well layed out example of a segregated cemetary of the time. There's a map showing where the various religious areas are.

There's information about the residents on the usual websites; findagracv, billiongarves, ozgenonline just google Heathcote cemetery & a name.

It'd be nice if like Greytown they'd provide some information "of the time" like death notices, newspaper clippings, antidotes, etc

A beautiful old Cemetery with loads of history to discover.

Heathcote is on the land of Taungurung traditional owners.
The cemetery is two yards on either side of the street. The original seven acre yard was opened in 1854, and the yard opposite is a modern lawn cemetery. Parking is on the side of the road out front. The original boneyard is quite large and on a slight incline. It has wide pathways, seating and shade but no facilities or drinking water. The yard is laid out in almost a heart shaped design, segregated by religion. There is a monument to the 40 Chinese people known to be buried there over a century ago, and a handful of surviving headstones. A sign on the fence reads "No Horses", so don't even think about it.
