Schafberg

If you're in the Salzkammergut area looking for an epic view off the a mountain, Schafberg is pretty much the perfect option.

You don't want to walk up? Just take a mountain cog train and enjoy the spectacular views with a minimum effort.

You love hiking? Choose from a good amount of different routes of varying difficulties from almost any direction. I personally went for the moderate option starting at the St. Wolfgang's SchafbergBahn (mountain cog train station in the village) - this takes 3 hours including short breaks and you ascend 900m of altitude. 2/3 of the route are in the forests, the remaining third is full of amazing views over the sorrounding Alps.

It's *not* true there's nothing to do at the top of the mountain. There are several restaurants to visit and if you want to see the area from different angles or just enjoy more spectacular views, I'd strongly recommend to walk around the edge of entire Schafberg, which can easily add another 90 minutes to your schedule.

All in all, beautiful place for all that love mountains and dramatic views.

Great view up top, hard to get a feed especially during midday. Both peaks are super to sit, chill and take in the surroundings. Recommend really exploring around the peak and not hanging around the resort area.

Amazing hike with 1200 ascending meters. The view from the Schafbergspitze is amazing and it lays on 1783 meters above sea level. 😀

REALLY great views here! Recommended to go, either by walking up or taking the train.

Took a long time to climb down, but the view from the top of the mountain is definitely worth seeing

Breathtaking views! We walk there from st.wolfgang app. 2,5-3 hours

If you have the opportunity to hike this mountain, do it! From Winkl (route 20) it took me almost 3 hours, and came down to St Wolfgang (route 25) I recommend hiking shoes for the way down through via Ferrata. I did it with my gym shoes and it was a bit slippery.

Beautiful spot to overlook the 3 different rivers in the area. You can get on the top by train or by hiking... it is just breathtaking 😊

Must visit!! Breath taking views! Words cannot describe the awe that the scenery inspired in me. You can park and pay for parking, your ticket for the very pleasant 30min train ride up and down, and even a boat ride on the lake! You can buy tickets depending on how much time you want to spend up there and trust me, the 1hr we decided to go with wasn't enough to explore the whole place!
