The other end of the imperial citadel. The gate itself is huge and majestic. You can visit the top of the gate and explore around.

Northern Gate ( Cửa Bắc ) of Thang Long Imperial Citadel was built in 1805 during Nguyen Dinasty, now is the only remaining gate to Hanoi Citadel. It has a height of 9m and 2.5m walls. The watch tower is restored for worshiping two national heroes Nguyen Tri Phuong and Hoang Dieu from the war time with French army. In the wall there are two bullet holes of French canon in 1882.

visitors hours 8 a.m.-5 p.m. every day except Monday. Entry costs VND30,000 ($1.3).

One of Hanoi's oldest structures. The Hanoi Imperial Citadel still carries gaping holes left by cannon fire that its north gate took in 1882.

Bac Mon is the only gate of the citadel, built during the reign of the Nguyen Dynasty (1802-1945), that still remains standing. It can be easily spotted on Phan Dinh Phung Street.

Since Thang Long was no longer the citadel back 1805, King Gia Long of the Nguyen Dynasty built one that was much smaller than the previous Thang Long Citadel. In 1831, under the reign of King Minh Mang or the second emperor of the Nguyen Dynasty, the name was changed from Thang Long to Hanoi.

The gate has Chinese characters that mean "North Gate."

The Imperial Citadel of Thang Long was regconized as a world heritage site by UNESCO in 2010

I was not expecting to come across this place while walking along Phan Dinh Phung. Turned out it was one of Hanoi Citadel's gate. It is just a small spot but the gate is well preserved and has a temple at the top. The guard was very nice to let me in even if it was already past 5pm.

One of the remaining gates to the 19th cen Hanoi citadel. There's a hole on wall made by the French canon shot from the Red river when they attacked and took this citadel from the Vietnamese
