On our way home to Missouri from Eastern Illinois we stopped in this quaint little town and visited some antique shops before stopping at the Sweet Shop and Mercantile. I bought a cheese danish. It was without a doubt the best sweet roll I have tasted. Be sure to visit this charming little shop and buy some delicious pastries. Your taste buds will thank you!!

December 2023:
Had to curb my craving for creme horns, so I stopped my favorite sweet shop in Pochantas. Unfortunately I couldn't get my carrot cake as it's only there on Saturdays.
But, I found something new a German Chocolate Danish roll.
Oh my God, is this something totally different than any Danish I've ever tasted, as I'm not much on Danish. But, this sweet tasty roll has totally changed my mind. The Danish is thin, with pecans, coconut, and chocolate icing. If you have never heard of tried, then you are missing out big time. My compliments to the cook, as I now love this German Chocolate Danish roll that can only be found here at Mercantile Sweet Shop. Don, boy, you've got a gold mine in tour bakery it beats out a lot of bakeries with your unique products. Thanks again ☺

Hours are Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
The bakery and antique shop were open, and it was a fabulous selection of bakery goods, sweets, syrups, jellies, dips, and all kinds of variety of hard. So the bakery, pies, cream horns, Easter cookies, and so much more. Don the owner was warm and welcoming to all the customers.
The antique store was interesting, to say the least. A combination of the bakery along with antiques is such a fresh idea.
I'm pretty sure they've been there for a while, and I didn't know about them.
Right off Highway 70 at Pochantas Illinois, so stop, and you won't regret your choice, we didn't!
OK, I forgot to mention the scrumptious cream horns.
Now, I'm usually not much on cream horns, but I remember a review where a lady stated how good they were.
Well, holy moly, are they delicious? The crust is flaky and crunchy with a just yummy cream, then covered with some powdered sugar.
Don, I'm not sure who bakes these, but they are out of this would fabulous tasting.
Even if you think you don't like cream horns, believe me, I think they'll change your mind. That is how good these delightful goodies really are big time.

Update:Let's talk miniature pies. Don, Don, do you have a fabulous baker whose desserts are just outstanding, to say the least, and perfect size to boot.
The miniature cherry pie, lordy such a tasty flaky crust with just the right amount of cherry pie filling and one of my favorite pies on top of it. The crust is flaky buttery and pie filling perfectly. It can't get any better, literally folks. Then, the miniature chocolate cream pie with whipped cream along with chocolate chips. Once again, the flaky buttery crust and perfect chocolate pie filling with delicious whip cream and chocolate chips. My dad & grandpa would have loved this pie, and it was their favorite.
Even my little brother loved the miniature blackberry pie, too.
Overall, folks get there and try these scrumptious desserts. The baker makes these from scratch just for Don's bakery. Support your local businesses. That's how we keep this tradition of bakeries open for us all to enjoy.
Update: Out of this world scrumptious Carrot Cake, I just got it the other day. Lordy, moist along with carrots, walnuts, raisins, and cream cheese frosting. Best I've had in a long time. Just perfect, Don. Thank your baker from me.

Stopped there on a bike ride with my dad! Friendly on purpose, cozy environment, great bakes, and we were even offered free coffee and a place to sit. The German chocolate pastry was awesome! The owner took time to talk to us as well, and it was neat to hear how he’s made efforts to preserve the history of the downtown area. Glad we visited & we’ll stop by again when we’re in that neck of the woods!

I absolutely adore this place! It is our go-to every weekend that we camp! The selection of baked goods, antiques, local gifts and foods are the best in the area. Highly recommended! Oh, and the owners/staff are amazingly friendly!

I can't say enough about the baked goods I bought. Donuts and such are only available on weekends, but they are definitely worth waiting for! It was very hard to decide what to get because everything looked scrumptious!!

I visited through this town with my friend on a road trip last year, and we stopped in at this sweet shop! We absolutely loved the man who was working there; he told us about all sorts of cool things to do around town, and of course we had to get some sweets for ourselves! I highly recommend their cream horns, but most of all, we loved their jalapeño cheese bread! It was so flavorful and delicious, and we loved every single bite of it! This is a wonderful place to stop by, and I am so jealous of the people that get to live near it because of how wonderful and fun our visit was! I will definitely be back!

We usually call ahead of time for those delicious cream horns!! The couple that owns the shops are a delight to talk with. They have revitalized the sad little town of pocahontas. Thank you. Thank you for your visions
