Nice and cozy place with excellent coffee and good food.
Note: if it is not open at 7am just wait for the owner to show up. He will be there before 8am. It's worth waiting for.

We stayed at a nearby hotel and wanted breakfast within walking distance. Au Lait was a wonderfully pleasant surprise! The food was fresh, delicious and hot, chill vibes inside, and pleasant, helpful service. I asked for a combination of three different sandwiches from the menu and they made it happen with enthusiasm. I will return!

We were looking for a place to have breakfast, and this is very good. It’s in a lower level of the street, French style, tasty croissant that you can fill with anything you want. The physical copy of the newspaper is the thing that I liked the most! 5 stars!

Cafe au lait has a great atmosphere to get some work done and hang out. The food is absolutely delicious, which is a testament to the talented and friendly staff. I usually get smoked salmon bagel or egg sandwich and they’re both great. Smoothies are great too

Checked out this new coffee shop on a Sunday morning. We got the avocado toast, a chocolate croissant, and americanos

The avocado toast was delicious as was the chocolate croissant. Nothing to complain about with the Americanos as well.

Nice place to have a coffee or breakfast. Good selection of choices and freshly prepared tasty food and drinks. They offer both inside and outside seating. Owner is very friendly as is the other staff. Good place for a stop.

what a great addition to the 17th Street neighborhood. This feels like a bistro in France or Morocco. It It smells like a wonderful bakery inside. I only had a latte this morning but the pastries and breakfast sandwiches look as good as they smell. Delightful music is playing softly in the background and the owner is a joy.

My Green Goddess Sandwich, with homemade pesto hummus, was delicious! I devoured half of it before I realized that I should have taken a picture for this review 😊.

Delicious breakfast sandwich. My husband forgot to tell them he does not eat spicy, and they made him a new sandwich free of cost and very kindly. Highly recommend!

This is my go-to coffee-and-breakfast shop in the District: the service is always fantastic, the ambiance is cozy--perfect for either working or chatting with friends--and the menu selections are tasty. More, my experiences there are consistently buoyed by the owner and staff's sustained efforts to create a welcoming space. It's a neighborhood gem that I recommend to all my friends and acquaintances.

The latte tasted great. They have all sorts of books in the shop, ambience is just perfect. Banana bread is so tasty that you'll want to order more than one. Very chill vibe overall and the girl behind the counter was very kind. Will certainly be back.

Really nice place with great coffee and fresh and delicious pancakes <3 we arrived at 7:30 but did not open until 7:45, so if you arrive and it’s closed, have a bit patience, the owner will maybe arrive a bit later to open and it’s worth the wait

The cappuccinos here are incredible. There's no undercurrent of bitterness that you get from most places. The espresso is so smooth, it's just wonderful.

I just love this place. The owner is super friendly and the smoothies are AWESOME. This is also becoming a venue for teen bands to play so it's REALLY cool that the owner has offered up his space for this vital service for younger local musicians.

I’m fairly new to the neighborhood and came across this cafe by chance. I’m so glad I did! The owners are the friendliest & most genuine people you’ll ever meet.

The restaurant itself is French-themed as the name might suggest and has a charming vibe…

The interior is spacious and welcoming and there is also a nice patio space outside both are areas where you can sit comfortably with company or solo and enjoy a wide selection of sandwiches, soups, wraps, coffees/teas & pastries.

I would definitely recommend this place and enjoy coming here often.

Love this coffee shop! It's a great addition to the neighborhood and my husband and I love stopping by on our morning walks. They're dog friendly and the staff is incredibly friendly. The French music and smell of fresh croissants make for a great atmosphere. Both the indoor and outdoor spaces are perfect for working. Highly recommend this cozy spot!

This is the first review I've ever posted in my life. By far, Au Lait is my favorite coffee shop - it feels like an extension of my home. They have the absolute kindest owners and employees, along with great coffee & food. Highly recommend.
