Tom Kelly's Bottle House

A great spot in this ghost town to stop and explore a very unique house. I mean, it's made of BOTTLES! Very cool, makes great photos, has a fun little "miniature town" and other items all around as well.

Interesting house in the center of Rhyolite with the external walls made of bottles. This was a common building technique in the old West when building materials were scarce and people used everything they could find. We saw another one in Calico Ghost Town.

Rhyolite is such an incredible town. The signs posted around are extremely informative, including for the bottle house! Truly a unique experience and worth the drive

Great find in the middle of nowhere. Rhyolite Ghost Town is worth visiting. Have a look at the cemetery too. Dusk adds to the atmosphere.

It's amazing to see this house still standing after so many years. The time we went we were lucky enough to be able to see the house up close as they had the gate open. Truly a little gem in the middle of the desert.

A sight to see but to get its true value you need to know it's history. I'm not an expert but from what I understand this home was built in 1906, before the railroad reached this town so supplies were limited. If you've ever been to rural nevada you'd know we don't have many trees, therefore wood structures would not have been an option. Nevada does though have lots of nateral clay and where you find humans you will find waste. It took 50,000 bottles to build this place. In one year, you would have to collect about 140 bottles..EVERYDAY! During my visit I imagined myself there, in 1906, while this man was working with all he had. I can see the blood, sweat amd tears it took to build this home. It takes me back in time and it is beautiful.

So photogenic. You can't go inside the house, but we were able to peer through the windows and walk around the property.

An old Miner built a house out of 30,000 bottles in 1905!! What else can you say about it!!

Interesting house that we could walk all the way up to and look in the windows. Story on why it was built is interesting. Well worth the stop if in the area.
