I have a love for intimate settings. I didn't visit this monument much before I had the opportunity to photograph a few weddings here. If you're looking for somewhere intimate, yet beautiful I highly recommend it. The only downside is parking. Wherever you decide to park, you're going to have to walk a bit to reach the monument.

This was my first time photographing at this location and I was so excited for it! It felt very intimate and its far enough away from the rest where there isn't too much foot traffic. Parking is difficult so expect to have to walk a bit to her here and sometimes segway tours do a little circle around it. Other then that it is perfect for small weddings or even an elopement (you can self officiate in DC).

So much fun and a great learning experience. Best if you go at night when everything is lit up.

This memorial, dedicated to the Washingtonians that participated in The Great War, is overlooked compared to surrounding sites, though it’s a monument not to miss.
500 names of all participants regardless of race, ethnicity or branch of the service are listed along the outside foundation.
Standing in the center at the small rotunda and looking up, you see a spectacular interior of the dome. Looking ahead and taking in the 360 degree view, the ionic columns frame views of the National Mall, WWII Memorial and Washington Monument.
You don’t have to spend much time here to enjoy it for a moment and respect the intention of the D.C. War Memorial.

Beautiful, peaceful memorial that is never over-crowded. This is also a lovely spot for small weddings and elopements and has been a particularly popular place in 2020 during the pandemic. Our wedding photography team (HannahBjorndal.com) loves photographing couples here and has found it to be the perfect combination of classic DC and originality - it doesn't feel touristy, overdone or too busy.
To have your wedding here, you need to file for a permit with the National Park Service. You will get a 2-hour time slot and the permit is very inexpensive, I believe it is currently between $140-250. It is hard to get to if you have many guests driving and parking themselves, so I'd recommend having transportation arranged for your group!
This is also a great option for JUST wedding day portraits. If you are interested in a very classic DC backdrop but your wedding venue doesn't have photo locations that you love, this is a very easy spot to visit with your wedding party, family or just the two of you. Again, definitely recommend hiring a transportation service to take you to and from! You will need to file for a photo permit here as well, and it is $140. They only issue one permit at a time at this location, so file for it as early as you can!
This spot is so picturesque and there are a lot of options nearby for other photo locations - if you are looking for the perfect spot in DC to elope, this is it!

Beautiful setting for this less assuming but meaningful Memorial dedicated to DC residents who gave their lives in WWI.

Amazing memorial to DC WWI residents who paid the ultimate sacrifice. Upsetting to see Google allow many pictures that are clearly NOT pictures of this memorial. I've seen pictures of cars, bridges, other monuments, even the Supreme Court building on the DC War Memorial.

My friends and I didn't stay long at the D. C. War Memorial, but we had to stop. This one is slightly off the path of memorials compared to all the others in the area. To a certain extent, it feels hidden.
It's a beautiful memorial and one I suggest persons visit.

Many people believe(d) that this was the World War 1 memorial, but is in fact just for those from D.C. who served or helped the Great War effort. It was erected in 1932 in the Great Depression (like many other memorials, monuments, and governmental buildings in the District). It has the names of those who helped the effort or perished around the Romanesque memorial. There is another Great War regimental memorial by the White House (which is super cool), and the national World War 1 Memorial to the east of the White House- it opened in 2021. Worth a visit if on the Mall, cheers.

I have been trying to come to this beautiful place to rest for centuries. But one day. Mark my words. I will be here and i say this when i come i will rest at last. The journey is never over. Amen to you who understands for god is watching . The questions we. Should ask us and ourselves is? Do we go right or do you turn left. In god we trust . In god i trust. Amen

The District of Columbia War Memorial was built in 1931 to honor the 26 thousand area residents that served in WWI the "War to end all war." It's not the biggest monument around, but I love its simple lines and human scale. Unusual for monuments of the time, it has the names of 499 soldiers who died in the conflict, seven of them women. Designed as both memorial and bandstand, none other than DC native John Phillip Sousa led the US Marine Band at the November 11, 1931 dedication ceremony.

Did you know, DC has a War Memorial on the National Mall. It is located near the World War II Memorial and a short distance across the street from the MLK Jr. Memorial. Depending on on your route, you could see the domed structure and totally miss the historical marker.

Really cool monument and the crowds aren’t really at this one so you can have it to yourself for a bit, which is nice. There is a restroom nearby also.

Beautiful place! Should be curated with some flower gardens around it and it would be magical!!

A nice little memorial. The stone feels amazing. Not a lot of people around so it gives it a peaceful, almost forgotten touch. Worth a visit.

Not many people venture off the main routes to see this one, including us the first visit! We made sure to stop when we revisited for the MLK addition to the park opened!

The only monument on the Mall dedicated to DC residents, specifically those Washingtonians who gave their lives in WWI. A special place; modular shows held here sometimes too
