Newman Cemetery has some of the best preserved older gravestones in Rhode Island. If you are into hand carved grave stones carved before 1800 there are many fine examples here. There are also many field stones with initials of the dead and the date of their death. These field stones preceded carved slate grave stones in Rhode Island. Some of the grave stones are very substantial and are 5-7 inches thick. There is a very nice stone for Sarah Hunt (1799) that was signed by George Allen who "Sculpt it".
