I have watched To Kill a Mockingbird many times. The courthouse (which was constructed as a set in Hollywood) seemed very familiar because it is duplicated so well in the movie.
This town is where Harper Lee grew up. (Her and Truman Capote's have been torn down. The home of the person depicted as Boo is still there.) She spent many childhood days in the courthouse watching her lawyer father in court ( he practiced business, family, etc. law rather than criminal law).
GO GO GO GO!

So cool to see the courthouse that inspired To Kill a Mockingbird.
Small, but very well done exhibits on Harper Lee and Truman Capote. Worth the stop if you are anywhere close by.

Truman Capote exhibit, Harper Lee exhibit, and the preserved old courthouse room are must-see for literary road trip types like us. Hugely friendly reception from Gracie, local black lab and resident greeter, and a peaceful, informative, well organized tour that costs only $5 to do and takes less than an hour. Thank you to Monroeville for the hospitality!

When you walk in the doors of the Old Monroe County Courthouse, you can just feel yourself walking back in time! It still looks the same as when I was a child. The museum is an unguided tour of the courtroom and the little adjacent rooms. It's in one of these rooms that a video is playing. It's on this video that my grandmother speaks about her experience growing up in Monroeville. I took my son & my niece to see that video, and then we spent a few minutes in the courtroom. My great-great grandfather (and their great-great-great grandfather) was a judge in that courtroom, so that was pretty cool to think about.

A true piece of history. Words cannot describe how much knowledge lies in this building. It is one that should be experienced first hand. A little gift shop inside offers local goods as well. Was wonderful to visit this old gem in the center of a historical town.

I've been wanting to visit here for literally YEARS so it was an absolute joy to finally be able to do so. The town fair happening outside was a lovely bonus addition!
You can visit the ground floor of the museum for free; there's a $5 fee (as of November 2023) to go upstairs. But of course you MUST go upstairs since from there you can see the whole courthouse and sit in the galleries. It's self-guided so you can see whatever you like and spend as long as you like; it's uncanny how similar it all looks to the movie (though as they'll tell you when you arrive, nothing was actually filmed there - it was meticulously recreated on a Hollywood sound stage).
If you're a Mockingbird fan then this is a must. Hopefully you'll get a few moments when there's no one else too close by, so you can sit on a bench seat and look down into the main room and hear the echo - "Miss Jean Louise, stand up. Your father's passing."

If you are within a 100 mile radius of Monroeville, AL, you must visit this place. You truly and literally step back in time when you cross the threshold of this courthouse. it contains three stories of history and in depth illustrations and information of two of America's greatest authors.

This is a great little slice of well-preserved 1930's small southern town court life, with the recreated law offices and the beautiful oval courtroom. The displays are well done and the gift shop is amazing! Just step in there if nothing else. Well worth a trip, especially if you're a reader.

If you love To Kill a Mockingbird the town and especially the courthouse are a must see. The city takes pride in the museum inside the courthouse which honors authors Harper Lee and Truman Capote. The film used the courthouse courtroom exactly as it exists. Harper's dad's briefcase is on the lawyer's table. One can feel the presence of racism and the attempt to be democratic. It's a sad commentary on the truth of racism in the past that exists into the presence.

If you have never been to Monroeville, put it on the list. Quintessential small southern town. See the Old Courthouse Museum and "To Kill a Mockingbird". Go to the Prop&Gavel for a bite. Loved it!

This is something Alabama can be proud of. It is a great example of the grand old courthouses that were once a source of pride for the various jurisdictions.

This was a cute, little museum packed full of information. We got a personal introduction and then were allowed to explore. It's only a $5 entry fee.

The epicenter of "To Kill A Mockingbird". The tour of the courthouse is worth the drive.
