McDonough County Health Department

I just want to offer a GREAT BIG THANKS to the lovely staff and nurses at the McDonough County Health Department for their efforts yesterday. My husband and I have been going to the health department for 2 years to get our blood drawn for standard test requests from our health care provider. Our doctor charges nearly $2000 (yes two-thousand) for the same tests that the health department does for $100-$150. Without the health department, we wouldn't be able to afford these important health checks.

Not only are the staff at the health department professional - but they are always friendly and knowledgeable. On this year's blood draw, they got my vein first time, which is not easy to do! I've had emergency rooms have difficulty finding my veins.

My husband has had a good experience there previously too, although needles make him a little nervous, so I was extremely shocked when he had what looked like a seizure and then passed out from what apparently, is an extreme vagal response to needles/stress. I appreciate the nurses' expert treatment of my husband. Immediately after there was a problem, there were 2 nurses there to help him down to the floor - which is wonderful because my back is having troubles and I couldn't have gotten him on the floor myself. They asked to place my sweater under his head. They monitored his pulse, oxygen, and bpm and noticed that his pulse was extremely low. When he was alert enough to eat, they immediately got him a cereal bar and a drink with some sugar in it.

When my husband and I arrived at the emergency room (mainly due to the pulse and convulsions - we wanted to be sure he was ok) the doctor said that the nurses at the health department did exactly the right things, and stressed that it was perfect that he lowered gently to the floor to get blood to his brain and also to ensure he didn't fall - as that could have caused a lot more problems. These nurses checked all the boxes! Everything else was done perfectly and Darren is fine today thanks to these lovely ladies!
