Best management company I have ever rented from.

When someone finds a home, they hope to feel safe and comfortable. Unfortunately those two words are not found at this complex. If you are a woman, you should know this company employs and supports employees that are predators to women and have sociopathic ideology in regards to what they want to do to women. When incidents are reported, the management would rather defend disgusting behavior then protect the people who pay their rent. If you are considering this place to live, I advise you to find somewhere else to spend your money. This is not the place for you. Especially if you are a woman.

Berkeley Hall Management LLC is known for offering this type of apartment complex and management, but their level of service is extremely disappointing. Below, you will find the email exchange I had with them after repeatedly informing them for over two weeks about the problem of a strong smell of marijuana coming from nearby properties. The police have also confirmed this issue and expressed their surprise at the situation in this complex.

I just wanted to follow up with you in regards to your complaint about smells permeating your apartment.

I’m not sure if you are aware or not, but for the last several years North Carolina has permitted the sale/consumption of certain CBD and Hemp products while still keeping Marijuana against the law.

The short version is that legal hemp/cbd and illegal marijuana are indistinguishable from each other absent lab testing. They look the same, smell the same in flower form, smell the same when burned/smoked, and even police K9 units are unable to distinguish. That means that while “the odor of marijuana” used to be a good indication that a crime was being committed, the Director of the SBI specifically states that it no longer is (see page 2 of the document).

The Retreat at 68 is NOT a smoke-free community, which means that someone smoking by itself is likely not a violation of the lease. It is my understanding that despite being notified about potential crimes occurring on/around The Retreat at 68, the police have yet to issue any criminal citations or make any arrests related to your stated issues. We typically encourage tenants with knowledge/evidence of crimes being committed to contact the police directly. This is for 2 reasons – 1) it cuts out the hearsay related to the information being relayed to multiple people before it reaches law enforcement, and 2) it cuts out potential delays in the notification.

Unfortunately, there is little we can do in this situation—if you suspect drug activity or any other suspicious activity, you will need to call the police. *if they can verify your claims, then a paper trail will begin; helping us down the road if we need to proceed with the court process.
