Thayer Campground

It is such a cool, remote area. The river is beautiful and there is a small map in a visitor stand that shows where you are. If you take McAfee Rd, exercise extreme caution in a vehicle. There are sharp drop offs, cliffs, mud, potholes, and it is one lane but open for two lane traffic. It still made for a beautiful drive.

Great hidden place within the park. Road getting there from Thurmond is long, narrow and windy. Do not take road from Prince to get here. Only 4 campsites here but close to the river and only restroom is a port a potty. Places to fish and put boats/kayaks in the water. However it frequently gets trashed by disrespectful people.

This is where I grew up always loved it there!! Took my kids and wife there to just love it and all the memories that were made there!!

Way out in boonies. No cell service but great fishing swimming camping a little on ruff side cause tents sits on hills and train 10 foot behind tent

Went Sept 2019 had a helleva time, love it would love to spend the rest of my life there

Great camping area right on the New River. Be aware of active train tracks.

It is like Heaven ❤ Not that hard to get to , just seems like it ! Enjoy folks

Loved it like always

Camped at Thayer campground last summer. Very private. No one else was at the sight. Campground is 1st come 1st serve so it is a long drive to chance not getting q site.

It's a beautiful place at the end of the road, barely past local residence on the river. Very close to an active railroad. There is a chemical port-a-potty as well. Neighborhood dogs do frequent this park.
