Easy 5 stars to this campground! Several spacious sites located on the bank of the New River. The camping is free and first come first serve. We got there around noon on a Saturday in October and there were at least 4 open spots. There is a size able parking lot for the river access and another parking area further down the road for camping. The bathrooms were nice enough for pit toilets.

Hard to beat this view and the fact that it’s free! The walk-in tent sites are right next to the river! For those who need it, there are also two handicapped spots near the walk-in sites!

Tables and fire pits at each site, and clean vault toilets next to the parking area.

Exceptional campground even if I felt sites were too close together. Restroom(pit toilet) nearby, no shower or potable water.
Camping by the river was very nice, you do hear some road traffic and a train across the river. Would definitely camp here again!!

Camping for 40yrs now and this is one of the best sites i have ever stayed in. Very peaceful, except for the occasional coal train. We stayed in the last site and loved the privacy we got from the rest of the sites.

Beautiful tent campsites with close parking and vault toilets. It's a free, first-come-first-served campground, so you probably don't want to arrive late on a weekend spring-fall. We arrived at 5pm on a Friday in early May and the tent campsites were half full (they were full by dark). Each site has a picnic table and fire ring.

Awesome view and quiet place to camp at. Unfortunately after we set our tent we left few hours later to go ahead and drive to Kentucky. We have 3 lil kids with us and didn't feel like dealing with black bears (there was bear sighting there). Otherwise, it is a beautiful view camp site

A real gem. Can't say enough about this awesome free for now campground. Very clean. Rangers were helpful and respectful The newest National Park is growing fast and in 2023 they are going to be charging to stay here . It's no frills charm, bring your own water , but on the clean New River was beyond expectations

Beautiful place to stay and absolutely worth the drive. Very nice people and well kept facilities for being a remote campground. Access to the river for fishing or swimming and great walk-in campsites that are first come, first serve. Definitely going back.

I went here to meet up with some folks for a kayak trip on the upper New River so I did not actually camp. This campground looks to be a more primitive site in that I did not notice and running potable water available there. But the site was nice and clean and quiet. There are vault toilets available there and they were well kept and clean.

Free developed camping by a river — what is not to love? Some walk in sites and around a dozen drive-in sites — all without electrical hookups. Also a boat launch spot. This location is convenient to lots of local landmarks. One note: dry wood is scarce and can be hard to find in local shops, so you may need to bring your own.

Nice out-of-the-way campground with several spots for small to medium RVs and tents. There are no electric or water hookups. Sites are first come first serve and are FREE. Great place to take the family for a relaxing outdoor experience. Access to the New River for swimming and fishing is a short walk. A boat launch for smaller watercraft is available. No showers or flushing toilets, just open toilets. I stopped by the other day to check it out. I will be back.

My favorite camp ground. Except bring a flashlight at night cause public bathrooms do not have inside lights. Fishing sucks but for camping, swimming ,walking along sandbar, or just watching rafters come down river it's great. They need to cut some trees out of campground cause durning a storm we lost a brand new $152.00 Walmart tent a big limb blew down on top of us in the middle of the night ripping it all to pieces had to sleep in car yes we checked above in the tree the best we could before placing tent but trees in camping area are so tall and thick plus needs more than 10
Pull in sites. NEXT STAY On April 21 23we camped out at the walk in and the toilets stink so bad you will seriously need some kinda cloth over your face this smell could be hazardous to your health. The men who take care of them has not done anything except take a water hose and sprayed into toilet making it worse .

My family has been coming to this camp now for almost 20 years. When we first started coming you could camp right down on the beach with your tent and car almost right next to it. While you can no longer do that (which is a bummer) they have improved the campground greatly. It went from just having port-o-potty to having the best bathroom around that does not have running water. it is the cleanest and best smelling bathroom facility I have ever used in a campground. Yes, it does not have running water, so you need to bring your own for eating, cleaning, and bathing. The views are fantastic, the memories even better, and time spent in the wonderful state or WV are fantastic. Stay away if you like creature comforts. Welcome it with open arms if you like to rough it a little, love the outdoors, and are looking for a place to call home away from home.

Been coming here for 20 years. I love this place. The train goes by a few time a day, and over the years I have learned to actually look forward to it. I suspect there is a siding right across the river as trains come to a full stop, wait a while, and start again, which is pretty wild. You can hear all the cars being pulled tight all the way down the valley, like one long chain reaction. Fishing is fantastic, but catch and release only.

Also know this interesting fact while you stare at and ponder the river. The New River is one of the oldest rivers in the world at 300 million+ years, with some saying it is the oldest and others saying it may be the Nile or the Finke River. Either way, it was flowing when dinosaurs walked the earth.

Car camped here in the winter, which sounds crazy I know, but we had a good time. We were right on the river, could hear the water while we slept and everything. The bathrooms were decent, no sinks or any sort of running water, which is fine I guess. They do provide toilet paper, in case you forgot some.
That's another thing; if you're lacking in anything, the shops in Beckley are literally 15 minutes away. Definitely a plus unless you insist on a back country feel.
Only quips that didn't bother us, but might bother someone else: the rail bridge is right there, so when the train passes by every few hours, it's pretty loud. Also the road to the site is like 40 percent potholes. So if you're heading here or to the southern Glade Creek grounds, don't bring your low clearance sedan.
