I had some gastrointestinal issues. I went to the ER and was seen by nurse Lisa and Doug. I was seen in less than 10 minutes. An average of 2 to 3 hours is more the normal wait, where I am from. Feeling horrible, I was greeted by a nice warm blanket. They were both caring and professional and made me relaxed and taken care of. I would be back anytime. Dr. Player was great. I thought it would be a waste of my time. I was that glad I went. I felt much better.

Every staff member I dealt with today was awesome! Gentlemen that volunteers at information was very helpful! The MRI nurses Crystal and Ashley were compassionate, kind and efficient! Got right in for my appointment and it was a long one today. Very patient ladies! Thank you

I had a very positive experience here when hospitalized a few years ago. I just wanted to share my positive feedback as most online reviews tend to be exceptionally positive or negative (which goes for most things).

The food was good, the staff were very kind and courteous, and the medical equipment/rooms in general were in great condition. There's not much else you can ask for.

The diagnosis and treatment were straightforward, so I can't speak to the higher-level competency of the doctors/nurses as a result, but what I did see was very positive.

My experience at the UP Health System - Portage at its ‘main campus’ in Hancock MI was excellent. While on vacation in the Houghton area I experienced a medical issue severe enough to go to the Emergency Room in Hancock on a Saturday. With five or six other people before me, I was able to be seen after about an hour and a half. Based on my symptoms the ER doctor advised I should enter the hospital for tests and observation. Within another hour I was situated in a private room and soon thereafter treatment for my symptoms commenced. Tests the next day gave a diagnosis and on Monday I was discharged, feeling much better, and with medicine and instructions for follow-up.

All of the doctors I saw (four including the ER doctor) were outstanding in explaining the possible causes of my symptoms, what was ahead, the meaning of test results and to answer my questions. Busy doctors must be brief and efficient but I never felt rushed or cut off in explanation. Before I left the hospital I was also visited by a case manager that among other things insured that I had someone to pick me up when discharged and that I would have what I needed when I arrived back home.

The regular attention of nurses to check for vitals and needs was outstanding. The only time I summoned a nurse by call button they arrived in about a minute but admittedly, the nurse station was right next to my room. I was really grateful when they were able to find me some books to read, some glasses to read them with and a late night popsicle after the hospital kitchen was closed. All the nurses I encountered were professional in their care but went beyond to be helpful and kind.

Ordering from the hospital kitchen was easy: they were aware of my diet restrictions and the food was good and delivered promptly and cheerfully. The areas of the hospital I saw including my room were exceptionally clean and the equipment looked modern and well maintained and functioned well. The second floor area I saw was well lit with natural light and included a nice display of scenic UP photography.

To be far from home yet find such a good care facility was fortunate, turning a stressful medical event into one calmly and professionally treated and resolved. Thank you Portage Hancock Hospital and staff!

I was concerned because of the lower ratings but found my visit to be nothing less than professional, courteous, and pleasant. Coming from downstate in the middle of the series of rabies vaccinations there was concern I would not be able to be treated. The health department does not do after treatment, though they were helpful. I initially called Laurium and they were not able to help. Portage assured they could continue the series, took me and my brother, also mid-rabies series, right in and we were both in and out in about an hour. The receptionist was very helpful, Michael who took stats and administered the vaccination was personable and professional, the doctor also was personal and professional. Very pleased with the treatment we recieved.

Dr. Jared Meyette in pediatrics... i could go on and on! He is a hardworking, caring, and thorough doctor. He goes above and beyond for his patients and looks at the problem from every possible angle. My daughter has been to health professions at Marshfield, the University of Michigan, and other pediatric doctors and it took one visit to Dr. Jared to get a diagnosis and a plan for better health. Dr. Jared wanted to make sure we got test results that same day and he called me on his own time to go over them for me. He worked hard on collecting all the different pieces from professionals we've seen from all over. If you need a great doctor and answers, he is your guy. Portage Health don't ever lose this one as the service and care my daughter has received is irreplaceable!!

I recently heard about how above & beyond Dr. Parks went for my mom. My mom has recently been diagnosed with a very life altering diagnosis & we are absolutely devastated & stressed out to the max. The nurse was super skilled taking her blood in the E.R. the day before (my mom hates needles like almost all of us) & then the E.R. doctor immediately referred her to Dr. Parks. Dr. Parks then referred her to Wisconsin. My mom has no health insurance, so we were super worried for her, as hospitals will not take you for care with what she has been diagnosed with without proper health coverage; due to how much it costs (up to many hundreds of thousands of dollars).
Dr. Parks made sure my mom was accepted into a care program in Wisconsin to pay for her services out there!! We all cried when we heard about this. You don't know how much this means to my family & I.
We had no idea how we would afford care for her at what could have been many hundreds of thousands of dollars. All we knew was we needed to get her better. That's what was most important. I will never forget what you guys have done for my mother. Thank you so much for helping us during such a difficult time. My mother is more grateful than she has ever been in her entire life & so are we.

UP Health System - Portage, please allow me to put in a thank you to–& a good word for–Dr. Parks on my mother Marja's behalf. Dr. Parks has truly has been the light during a very dark time for us, & I thank God every day for my mom getting such a great doctor.

Thank you Dr. Parks, the nurse, & E.R. doctor she saw; & UP Health system Portage 🙏 My family & I are so impressed!

I have had two pregnancies here. Both were complicated by preeclampsia, but my second pregnancy was the hardest. Both me & my second baby would have died if it wasn’t for the delivery ward staff & the OBs. At 32 weeks, 6 days, I noticed that while my baby was moving, the movements were sluggish & weak. Went in to get an NST & they discovered my baby had to be delivered. First they saved my baby’s life. Then they saved my life. They prevented seizures & saved me from potential brain damage. They also saved my uterus so I didn’t need a hysterectomy. I can not recommend this hospital enough, especially for pregnancy care.

I received excellent care when I had preeclampsia 9 weeks before my due date. The doctor knew that I was going to have to deliver my baby early and had me sent to Marquette so I could deliver there. If I would have delivered at Portage, my baby would have been sent to the NICU in Marquette immediately and I would not have been able to get there for several days while I recovered. While at Portage, the nurses took excellent care of me. I was there for about 5 hours before I was sent to Marquette and the nurses fussed over me the whole time. I felt I was in good hands.

I personally had a positive experience here. I came in on a Tuesday, about noon and I was seen immediately. I have a pretty strong phobia of needles and IVs and the nurse and doctor who saw me were very accommodating and let me distract myself by talking about random things when they put in my IV and drew my blood. They did several tests before diagnosing me, so they were pretty thorough.

You people and your petty complaints. You don't know how good we have it here. Portage might have some older equipment but other than that it's one of the best hospitals I've ever been to and unfortunately I've been to dozens all across the U.S. The staff at Portage is so kind and caring. You never wait long. They take their time with you and they're well trained.
