Camp Paumalu

Glad to see it's still there! I went to GS camp there for a couple of summers in the late 1970s and they are some of my best memories from growing up. Glad to see someone post a photo of a cow, lol, we used to go up to the fence and challenge each other to go over the fence to where there were some bulls nearby. I don't think any of us actually got up the nerve to cross over the fence, but we sat on top of it. I remember walking down to the beach, which is quite a walk. From Google maps, it looks like a road, but I remember walking through tropical forest and there were fruit trees on our path, like guava, that we ate. We told everyone we walked 10 miles to the beach! But I see it's only about 3.5 miles each way. WHen you're 10 and 11 years old, it felt like 10. One of my leaders sprained her ankle running from a bore that she encountered near our camp, not sure if they're still around. I imagine the area is much more developed than in the ancient 1970s :) Great memories, and I really felt like I fit in more than I typically did in my everyday life. I felt safe, and I was happy. My daughter had a blast over the weekend at girl scout camp.

Great location to be in touch with nature. Honored to be able to impart some knowledge to the budding Daisies amd Brownies of the future of the Girl Scouts of Hawaii. Great staff. The schedule was gruesome as we had large and then small groups. It would have been nice to have evenly dispersed groups. Thank you GCH.

It's such a peaceful place. Doesn't seem like you're on Oahu, the most populated island.
