Beautiful long and well maintained gravel trail. Suggest starting at the New River State Park just south of Fort Griles. Then you can go either east or west taking in all of the history of the region. Enjoy.

My family and I consisting of 3 adults and 3 children age 3-10years old. Had a great time. It's beautiful this time of the year. The leaves are amazing. The bridges are all redone and super nice. We will be returning!

This trail is easily accessible and pancake flat. There are many points of interest along the way.

We have biked this trail several times starting in Galax, Foster Falls and this time in Austinville.

Superb, well maintained, beautiful scenery, gorgeous river views and you take it all in on foot, bicycle, or horse.

Such an awesome river to see! It flows north instead of south, and was extremely beautiful to see. It's one of the oldest rivers in the country, so the historic value of the river is pretty neat!

Beautiful ride along the new river. Saw 24 deer in 2 hours. Friendly people along the route to our campsite.

Beautiful, peaceful place to walk or ride your bicycle! I'm not from the area so I didn't think about ticks but both my dog and I got some!! Good thing I caught them on time! It's a wonderful place to enjoy nature. Just do what you must to avoid ticks!

Located at the halfway mark of the New River Trail, this park is the formal gateway to one of the best rail trails in the United States. The gift shop has snacks, drinks, clothes and other fun items. The park is well maintained with historic buildings and quick access to the New River itself. We ended each day of bicycling with a refreshing soak in the shallow and inviting river making for what can be described as a "perfect summer day". We hope to ride this trail every summer!

Borrowed bikes from downtown Galax (New River Trail Outfitters, excellent experience!) and it was very close to the entrance of New River Trail. Absolutely beautiful trail, especially in autumn with the leaves changing colors. Highlight was definitely watching the crane fish by the waterfall. Highly recommend!

We had done the creeper trail and a friend told me about this trail. It was cold but great weather when we were there. It warmed up to the high 40s low 50s. We will be back to ride the rest of the trail. It is 57 miles long so we didn't get it all done in two days. Beautiful scenery, deer running around it was great. On the creeper coming down you can get away with not a lot of pedaling. Be prepared to pedal both ways here. Not hard just pedaling. We loved it!!

Such a great little piece of saved history along the river. There is a $7.00 parking fee but it is well worth it. There is a long trail here, the remnants of the original town of Foster Falls are still standing. They have camping, boat/tube/bike rentals here. There is a gift shop and a camp store as well.

I can't say enough about the trail. It's one of my favorite places on the east coast.
You're never too far from cool soothing water, or a good place to hang a hammock or pitch a tent. And while you're planning that 2, 3 or possibly even 4 day leisurely ride, don't forget to utilize the best guide, or shuttle service around. New River Outdoor Adventures.
They know that River and the surroundings very well. And they will make you feel right at home.

So much FUN! We had a big group and rented kayaks and canoes. It was the first time for most of us so we were so excited! The folks who worked there were very nice. They drove us to our starting point and told us what to look out for and where we had to land (which was back at the store). The water was calm at some areas and slightly rapid in some but we all got through it safely and had the most fun and wonderful time! Pretty scenery too. It was a great adventure (and arm/back workout!).

This is a really nice trail. I'm a runner, so I've only covered maybe 8 of the 57 miles the trail has, but the miles I've run around Shot Tower and the around the Ganbetta trail head and heading toward Fries were very nice. I imagine the rest of the trail is just as nice. I did see some bigger rocks on the section from Gambetta towards Fries Junction that probably would cause a few cyclists issues unless they had a fat bike (road tires likely would have had a rough go in spots) but overall, the trail seems well maintained. Gambetta trailhead did not have a lot of parking nor a restroom but there was a restroom at Fries Junction and a porta potty near a Campground as you headed towards the town of Fries from the Junction

Love this park. It's an amazing place to come for hiking, biking, and even horse back riding. There are few campsites along the way should you need them and a few places to use the bathroom and resupply on snacks and water. Just plan your trip if you going a longer distances. Plenty of places to stop and take a cool dip. Love it. We usually bike the whole trail in about 9ish hours, it's roughly 112 miles including the Fries junction segment.
