Darby Canyon Parking

This is the trail head to wind cave falls. It is about 6 miles round trip to the cave and back. It was the perfect fall day when I went. A little bit rainy and overcast which made the fall colors really pop.
You can also follow Darby creek trail farther back into the canyon for many miles.

Beautiful trail with great views! Be prepared that after lots of rain the trail is more difficult and sometimes the little creek is impassible.

Wonderful and very popular area to go on a quick day hike. The views are amazing as you begin your journey up to the wind caves and even better once you get to the opening of the cave. The trail is 3.2 miles to the very top of the cave and has an elevation gain of almost 1800 feet in elevation over that milage. Careful if you are scared of heights as the later part of the trail has a lot of elevation gain in a short amount of time and the trail is right on the edge of the mountain with many deep drop-offs. There is water that you can filter just shortly after you begin the hike, but nothing else until you get to the very end of the hike. Usually early on in the season, there is a small stream that you can get water from about a mile from the end. As the season progresses, this small stream dries up and is no longer available.

Wonderful trail to hike! I had a young bull moose pass in front of me when it was spooked by another group heading down the trail. It took me about 4 hours to hike without exploring the cave. A storm was going to roll in and it started to rain once I made it back to my vehicle. Bring a raincoat because the first attempt to hike this trail was cut short due to a storm rolling in and when heading down I saw a few families unprepared for the rain and they looked cold and miserable. Take my advice and bring plenty of water and weather gear. Have fun exploring this beautiful area! Bring a camera too if you have one.

Trailhead, you say? Who comes here for the great hikes with scenic vistas and captivating wilderness? No one. They come for the parking lot. Darby canyon parking lot is the best parking lot... everybody says so.

It's rated moderate to advanced, moderate for the local human Billy goats, tough hike for us lowlanders! But worth it!

It takes about 3 to 4 hours to hike and it is so beautiful.

For the most part plenty of space but it does start to fill up around lunchtime.

In winter, can’t reach by car. Snowmobile, hike or XC skiing
