Desonier State Nature Preserve

So many beautiful little streams, and tons of mushrooms, including baby chanterelles. We also saw an owl that flew away before any photos could be taken. Somewhat muddy, and somewhat buggy. For a Minnesota hiker it was no big deal. I’ve seen more mosquitoes in the first five yards of hikes at Father Hennepin state park than I did in this entire five mile loop.

The bridges of Athens county. UPDATE: The old trail with all the picturesque bridges crossing streams is no longer open. I assume this is a permanent change as they took out the first bridge and put up signs on the parts of the trail that cross the new trail. This is a shame as that is what made it unique. I will grant them that a lot of the trail was low lying and could be muddy, but if they shut it down for that reason it seems like there would be better alternatives.

Anyway, the new trail is a much more run-of-the-mill trail for this area. It isn't bad, and it is drier than before, but it lacks the features of the old one, as I've said a few times now... The main loop is 1.5 miles and there is an offshoot that adds another mile.

Old Review:
This place fits the description "hidden gem" to a T. It is just outside of Athens and not far off the highway. It doesn't seem to be that busy, the trail is well maintained, and it is just right for a decent hike at 2 miles. There are a lot of stream crossings with bridges and even a little watering hole that kids might like to cool off in.

Absolutely peacefully great aerobic walk/hike just watch out for the wet spot SE of trailhead

The trail was very well-kept. There was a good amount of hills. I worked up a decent sweat and got my heart pumping! I also did not see another soul, except a couple of deer.

Fun hiking and the nine year old had a good time. We look forward to going again in warmer weather. Lots of bridges made in more enjoyable for the kid and the creek was clear as could be. Beautiful place for a picnic <3

Beautiful cool and shady walk. There is some walking at the lower level, but the full loop includes a climb to the ridge top.

Saw a whole bunch of baby foxes and a big fox i figure is the mom but there were like 14 pups that we counted

The place is always clean and well maintained. I've been taking my granddaughter here for the last 4 years
