Gearin' Up Bicycles

(As of May 2023: CLOSED for indeterminate time.) Fantastic community bike shop with a great mission to support job training for underserved/at-risk youth and make biking more accessible to the DC area's diverse population. I used it to buy a refurbished road bike (love it, perfect fit, smooth ride), buy new & used accessories (great prices & quality), get adjustments (usually quick/while I wait) and get a tune up (after two years of regular use, rides like new-to-me again). Professional, personable & skilled staff, great prices.

Fantastic shop and mission! Quick affordable and pleasant service! Highly recommended, well worth some travel easy street parking! All in on this shop and its mission.

Had a great experience here! I went to one of their Saturday bike sales and was able to find a nice bike with the help of the staff! They also have a shop that you can go to for bike maintenance and to learn skills from the staff. Would recommend to anyone looking for a good bike in DC.

They did an excellent job of fixing up my bike (which I had messed up) and tuned it up really well. The price was reasonable and everyone there was very friendly. I will definitely be back. They also have a good selection of refurbished bikes and parts for sale and provide classes. Really a great shop.

Really happy with my experience here. I had a flat and they addressed it immediately, I was back on the road in 5 minutes. Reasonable prices, I think I paid $40 total for the tube, the tube change, and a new tougher tire, hopefully keeping the bits and bobs out of my ride.

Had several things fixed on my old Schwinn Traveler. The price for repair was great, and the customer service was as well. They gave me a very down to earth explanation of some of the problems on my bike too, which I appreciated because I often have trouble tracking with “bike guys.”

Great spot for bike repairs and purchases (although small selection at times..., my friend still bought a bike on trip #1.)

Wonderful local business. I bought a used bike from them and am very happy with it. After riding it for a day I brought it back in after experiencing some issues with the shifter and having bad luck with a puncture flat tire. They adjusted the shifter and replaced the tube at no charge. The owner is a great resource for local biking culture, bike gear and bike repair. I'll definitely be attending their bike repair classes and other events.

Just after moving to DC, this is where I bought my trusty bike. I was received with great energy and just overall amazing service. They helped me out on fitting me with a bike, describing the details/repairs of said bike (ie Shimano STI shifters, hieght adjustment, etc.), etc.. By far the nicest bike I ever did buy. You know I really love it here because I ended up naming my bike, Keith.

This is more a community than just a bike shop. I went there totally unsure of how to do anything, an easy target for price gouging, but these mechanics took me to the back and taught me how to do everything myself - and even made sure I could reproduce it before seeing me off! They are kind, extremely affordable, and even actively support cycling for LGBTQ communities!

I had Keith as my mechanic and Keith is seriously AWESOME. I'm sure everyone else is wonderful just like him:)

The hands in this shop are literally magic. Bring whatever you got, leave with a masterpiece every time. The love in this shop is unmatched if you're looking for a cool 1 of a kind bike either pre built or looking to try your hand at it yourself. This is your spot. It's the People's Champ of bike shops.

I have used several bike shops in the DC area and have been coming here for over two years. They always show great pride in their work, always willing to talk about recommendations to upgrade/not to upgrade. I love the classes that teach you how to work on your bike. But most of all, I love that they teach local youths how to build bikes and employ them to develop their skills and work ethic.

I wasn’t specific about what I needed I just asked them if they could fix any problems with my bike. Btw my bike was basically i rideable they managed to fix it in a really good time and made riding it feel better and gave me a good price amazing place I recommend it

Excellent Customer Service, very knowledgeable staff, great mechanics, excellent bicycles/part inventory. Treated like family. Anthony was great assistance in a time of need (caught a flat tire on the way to work). My tire was fixed in less than 10 minutes.

Good place. They provide standard full service tune ups but I particularly like it for the DIY service. If you need minimal guidance, you can get full access to their tools for $15 an hour. It's also a lot of fun to volunteer at so if you have any interest in learning more about bike mechanics, I'd suggest inquiring.

Love that this in an option in our community. Very affordable, professional, and quick service. Was in and out with a fixed bike within 30 minutes. Very happy to make the trek and support this organization.

We visited the shop to collect a ton of bike parts for an art project my company is working on. Keith and everyone in the shop was extremely helpful and friendly. Keith even took time out of his today to show us how to take apart the bike parts that we needed. I HIGHLY recommend Gearin' Up

Dropped off my brother’s hand-me-down road bike that had been in good condition but just needed a tune-up. Keith came out to take care of me, while following their company no-contact guidelines for COVID-19. I called multiple bike shops in the NoMa area and they were willing to charge me double of what Gearin’ Up charged me. FYI $65! Can’t beat it! Phenomenal service, courteous staff and will definitely be using this place again for any and all my cycling needs! Thank you guys!

Cool hidden gem in terms of biking service here in dc. Very friendly and knowledgeable guys here. Great prices, and no condescending attitude towards novice bikers. I will definitely be coming back and recommend this place to any bikers in the dc area.
