National Japanese American Memorial Reviews

A beautiful place to visit, especially during cherry blossom time. It is poignant reminder of our fear of the other among us. Our Japanese-American brothers fought mightily while their US-citizen families were interred in prison camps out in the deserts of America. The monument is a beautiful apology for the injustice and a good recognition for the men who fought bravely for our country. Many families lost almost everything and we did too little too late to make amends.

A well done memorial for those that fight and died despite the persecution of their people as well as a reminder of mistakes made. Just sort of tucked away over between Union Station and the Capitol. Worth a visit if you have the time!

One of the finest memorials in all of United States. Why do I say so? Because this memorializes a particularly nasty - and yet, routinely overlooked - episode in American history. That is, when World War II began, the US government put thousands of Japanese-origin persons, including American citizens, in large 'concentration camps'. This memorial looks back at that sorry episode; Reminds Americans of what went on in the past; Notes names and contributions of countless Japanese-origin Americans; and just does a really good job of paying tribute to the suffering of women and men eight decades ago.

Oh, and great cherry trees all around. They blossom gorgeously in spring. Go there in March. The place is heaven!

All Americans should learn more about the incarceration of Japanese-Americans. This memorial is a powerful reminder of what racism and fear can do even within the United States.

Very well done! Explains the whole story and highlights notable Japanese-Americans. A very nice and modest tribute to true American heroes.

An interesting and nice place. Very nice for reflection. Very interesting monument and well represented and symbolic. A subtle art, but with a strong meaning. Worth the visit! Located close to the Union Station, almost across the street. Would be nice to see with the Cherry Blossom tree blooming, but I could not see when I went there.

The Japanese Internment Memorial was near my hotel on the way to the Capitol so I checked it out. It was beautiful.

A peaceful sanctuary by capital hill with a short cut through of a corner lot. Memorial is elegant, graceful, somber, as befitting subject. Stone plateau gives respite from busy traffic. The sculpture of 2 embracing cranes captured in barbed wire embodies the quiet, powerful emotions and love of country among detainees. This is a best example of memorial art, despite the high tech bell that doesn't work and some needed yardwork. Perhaps a civic group might adopt for upkeep?

A small, stoic reminder of a dark time in American history. When we turned against our own and stripped Japanese Americans of their property, freedom, and basic human dignity. It's a shame that the memorial bell is not in service and that this memorial has been left to disrepair.

This was my first visit to this memorial, but it won't be my last. The story of Japanese Americans, and especially Japanese American soldiers, during WW2 is both tragic and inspiring, and definitely worth knowing.

Preserving a very dark, but important part of our American history. These stories need to be preserved and told again and again as to not be repeated. This memorial does that, exactly.
