This is an outstanding cemetery. The funerary art on display across the well preserved array of graves was to die for (sorry). The grounds are well maintained and they have MANY notable people buried there. This a historical treasure and one of the most aesthetically pleasing cemeteries I've visited.

My one suggestion for improvement is more visitor services support for historically inclined visitors. They do have a map available at the visitor center that had the rough locations of some notable graves but it didn't do a great job of helping actually find graves. Find a Grave app is a necessary companion.

Still, this place is fantastic. Go!

Visited Rock Creek Cemetery on April 15…on a lovely spring day. Nice place to take a walk while viewing the grave sites. Lovely cherry trees in bloom.

I wish to express my appreciation to Keena Terry, the manager of the Rock Creek Cemetery, and Brandon Hixson-Hamilton for their warm and expert assistance to my family. My beloved sister-in-law had passed away in Arizona and her last wishes included interment of her urn in the family plot in Rock Creek Cemetery. Acting at the request of the executor of her estate, I contacted Ms. Terry and made arrangements for a family-only graveside interment ceremony that was beautiful and meaningful thanks in large part to the sensitive and competent support provided by Ms. Terry and her staff. Other family members asked me to convey their gratitude.

I walk here several times a week, and pretty much every time I come, I find some new hidden gem. There are SO many fascinating tombstones, mausoleums, and statues (the Adams Memorial has an especially cool backstory), and the years on some of these graves are truly mind-boggling - the earliest I've found so far is 1762!! On top of this, the grounds are immaculately maintained and the entire space has this otherworldly quality to it that makes you feel like you've stepped out of a big 21st-century city and into some Victorian-era, pastoral oasis. Go and get lost in this beautiful, morbid maze - it's D.C.'s best-kept secret!

I visited Rock Creek after spending several crowded days at the Smithsonian, and was double struck by the peacefulness of this cemetery. The grounds are lovely and in April there were many trees and shrubs in blossom. I spent a couple hours there on a Sunday morning and was surprised at the paucity of visitors.

A well run, peaceful Cemetery, excellent accommodating staff, and reasonable pricing.

Very lovely place. But for someone thats born and raised in this area why are the "NEW" residents allow to just walk around with their baby strollers and dogs like it's some type of park. This is a resting place for peoples loved ones not a neighborhood park!! People sitting on the statues just to take pictures. So disrespectful

Such a beautiful cemetery. Always a favorite to visit on a nice day outside. I have been here a half dozen times and still have not discovered all the unique memorials. This cemetery is always a nice place to visit. For some reason, it is always on a rainy day that I happen to stop by. Springtime is always a great time to visit; so many cherry blossoms.

If you're also oddly inspired by cemeteries, you hit the jackpot with Rock Creek Cemetery. Not only if this cemetery sizeable and with many gems inside, it's next door to another equally interesting cemetery- Soldiers Home Cemetery. Both are located in the Northeast neighborhood of Fort Totten close to several restaurants, parks, and even breweries.

As you walk through the main gate, you'll read a sign that notes the cemetery was established in 1887. However, its story begins in 1719 when Maryland was under British rule. The cemetery was in the churchyard of St. Paul's Episcopal Church. When the British left, the area became part of D.C., and years later, it became Rock Creek Cemetery.

The cemetery itself has well-kept paths through the property. There are thousands of gravestones, mausoleums, and sculptures. There's also a chapel in the center of the property. The cemetery houses not only politicians but also athletes, writers, journalists, etc. One of the best-hidden gems inside is the Adams Memorial in honor of a photographer. You'll know you stumbled upon it when you see a circle of well-kept bushes. There's a small path leading inside to the eerie memorial.

One of the best cemeteries you will ever visit. The Mausoleums are plentiful and this place is just incredibly peaceful. Paul Tully's grave wins top prize for creativity. A chair, with a coffee cup and a newspaper that has the front headline of Bill Clinton winning the presidential election back in the 90's. Visit in the fall when all the leaves are changing color.

Beautiful cemetery where many big personalities are buried, including Alice Roosevelt, Gore Vidal, and what feels like all owners of the Dupont Mansions. Also home to beautiful sculptures like "Grief."

Home of what has been called the greatest work of American sculpture ever created, the Adams monument by Augustus Saint Gaudens. While he never named it -- and said that had he done so, he would have called it "The Peace That Passeth Understanding" -- it has often been called "Grief", supposedly based on a description of it attributed to Mark Twain (it has also been called "Peace" or "Nirvana"). Nearby is another noteworthy bronze by Gutzon Borglum (who is better known for Mt. Rushmore), "Rabboni", depicting Lazarus walking out of his tomb. A number of other noteworthy sites are listed on a map available at the church office.

Peaceful and Beautiful. But it's not a Park so please don't go there walking your Dog and exercising its disrespectful because it's a sacred place and they will tell you to leave!
