This is such a great place to visit. It's more than just portraits!
Also, make sure you enjoy the atrium. Grab a drink and bite to eat and just enjoy the stunning space. Take your time to wander through all the amazing spaces and look up; the architecture throughout the building changes and is beautiful.

Such a wonderful museum with a beautiful collection of American art, sculpture and portraiture. The portraits of the presidents were particularly interesting. The civil rights exhibit was very moving. We thoroughly enjoyed it. We spent about 2 hours exploring, would love to go back again someday as there's so much to see. We got there at the opening so there was no wait.

My family and I attended a Saam Arcade Art showcasing how music and sound is essential to video games. It was a fun and educational event. They had a scavenger hunt which encouraged us to visit most of the Art Sections. When an event is on going, it's still a great place to visit for all ages. We checked out numerous unique and interesting art pieces in the galleries. Will visit again.

One of the many stops I had to make to appreciate our art history in the United States. I won't post photos of the paintings and sculptures (go admire them yourself!) but no matter your taste in art you'll find it here. It's also an excellent place to rest inside, out of the elements - see pictures!

Spent about an hour walking through the multi-floored museum not really knowing what to expect. Very quiet and filled with security making sure nobody touches or gets too close to any of the exhibit pieces. Upon entering, security guard informed me that I had to wear my backpack on my chest so that I don't accidentally bump anything while turning around if it were on my back. I didn't get to see everything because of time restrictions, but I'd definitely like to return.

If you have not visited the American Art Museum or the Smithsonian Portraiture Museum (connected to one another) you are really missing out. There are top notch museums with no comparable anywhere else. These museums are not on the Capital Mall, though not far away, so sometimes visitors miss them. Its a wonderful area and you definitely are missing out if you don't go. See "the" original portraits and photographs of the presidents and major historic figures. These are often things you see on many things. They are however the originals. They are quite stunning. Check it out.

Amazing structure different from the rest of the museum. In a Renaissance beautiful art style that is magical. Lincoln's inaugural ball took place here.

One of my favorite museums in DC. Not only is it free but it also stays open later (7pm) than many of the other museums in the area. Hall of Presidents is impressive, especially the Obama and Clinton portraits. Go up to the third floor for an impressively large portrait of LL Cool J.

The architecture of the restoration hall is classic and not to be missed.

A wonderful exhibition and event space, with a gorgeous inner courtyard -atrium for music, food and relaxing. The theatre in the lower level has state of the art sound and piano. You learn the history of America wandering through the different galleries from 1600 to the present day. Now highlighting more diverse perspectives and visions. The gift shop is top notch ( as are all the Smithsonian shops) with original, eclectic gifts.

Wow! A must see. I went for the portrait gallery, in particular the Obamas portraits, so was unprepared for the sheer volume of amazing familiar paintings to be seen in person. It was really exciting to be there...

We've been there a few times
Every time it's mesmerizing
So many masterpieces and free admission !!!
Art in its diversity
Very educational notes, e.g. the connections between Mary Cassatt and Edgar Degas, Edith Wharton and Henry James....
Plus the classic landscapes
Always dizzy at the end 🙃

It's a one of the finest place for art and portrait lovers. You can imagine the world of portraits along with their history in audio. You can sit over the third floor and take some free time. Very good decorations and explanations.
Amazing place. Earlier it was at my least priority but once I entered inside the building I lost among the finest paintings and portrait. I spent more than 3 hours in this huge museum.

During my weekend visit, I experienced the Cherry Blossom Family Celebration with traditional music, that drew large crowds. Inside the Kogod Courtyard was the flower exhibit, showcasing Orchids. Finally, took in the artwork that covers several levels of this huge building. Take the stairs or elevators to get around. Restrooms on all levels, souvenir shops and a cafe are currently open.

Unexpectedly one of the best art museums I’ve been to - grouping themes, portrait write ups, the different mediums, creativity of the artists over 400 years depicted between both buildings, it had everything I didn’t even know I wanted.
