Great hike! Less than a mile from parking lot to peak but you can do a ~4 mile loop if you'd rather take a circuitous route. The trek from parking lot to peak was a good bit of exercise as it was fairly steep but the trail was well maintained and easy to navigate. Views at the top were fantastic. The rest of the loop was an easy stroll that was downhill most of the way.

Great hike! There's a hard trail that goes straight up. Short but challenging. There's a second trail about 6m (round trip) with a bunch of switchbacks that gets you to the top as well. My watch showed that I had +18000 steps on this route and it was much easier on the knees 😉

Beautiful views. I felt like I was on top of the world, with a good work out to boot 🥾

The trek ascending is difficult. However, take into consideration that there aren't a lot of markers like on the Skyline Drive trails. So, packing light and aiming with sunset at the forefront is a healthy conscience here.

It was beautiful. This time of year, there appears to be a good amount of ice on the upper trail, so we had to divert off trail a few times. It was snowing at the top (also beautiful and magical). The hike down was a little more treacherous. Many slips and I completely fell two times. The lower trails are longer, warmer, and felt like a whole different hike.

Gorgeous!! The hike is a challenging one-mile hike, so just take it slow and stay hydrated - you can do it!! We met up with a couple in their 80s who made it all the way to the top by spending the day, taking their time and enjoying the views. The views? Wow they are breathtaking! Pics dont do them any justice - you have to see for yourself and you will know what I mean.
This one is a must-see (and do) adventure ..
The Blue Ridge Parkway is an easy- going, windy but enjoyable drive - so even if you don't hike the Humpback Gap you are still in for a wonderful day of overlooks and stunning photo opportunities.

Great hike with beautiful views. We had planned to do the out and back but decided to do the full loop once we made it to the top. Worked out well because the way up was steep and a challenge but the way down was long but much easier with all the switch backs.

This hike is absolutely amazing it is so beautiful and the view at the top is breathtaking it is quite difficult but it's not so badd my three-year-old son was able to climb all the way to the top it was hard for him but he really enjoyed it and asked to go back all the time every time we have guests from out of the country this is the 1st hike we go I love that you can hide up and there's a beautiful view as a reward I'm not really a big fan of hiking down. Ever since we discovered it my family and I do this hike almost every week and we live an hour away!!

Been to Humpback several times, but this was the most strenuous of all the outings. We followed the trail up from the parking lot and the AT down. I guess we forgot the long, steep initial climb and the mini rock scramble before making it to top, then the relentless impact of stepping over smaller rocks coming down the AT. We came early in the week. Hardly anyone was there. At one point we were the only ones at the overlook. We all had a great workout and loved the hike. We even sighted a snake and young black bear running across the AT🐻

Beautiful day for our early morning hike. Week day morning, so only saw a few people. Short hike to the top and well worth the views.

What an enjoyable little hike, think total round route milage of the loop trail is about 4 miles. Has a good forest section and nice view at the top! We did the hike in winter and was chilly at the top so wrap up!!

We went during the falls months, and let me tell you, the views were gorgeous! If you're an experienced hiker, this proves to be a relatively easy terrain to trek. Be sure to look out for the decades-old engravings at the overlook. :)

It is one of the favourite hiking place. It might be challenging in the beginning but the view you reach at the end of your journey definitely worths all your efforts. End of October is the best time to visit this place while all trees change their colors. Some Sundays are available for concert.

We really enjoyed the 4.2 mi hike (about 1 mi from parking lot to overlook, then return by Appalachian Trail). The hike from the parking lot was busy, steep, mostly smooth, but definitely had some rocks to climb over. It was well worth it! Great hike with beautiful views! The Appalachian Trail return was much less steep, much less crowded, had just a couple rocky areas & a couple slippery areas but a very smooth easy hike. Heard from other hikers that a bear and cub had been seen, but we didn't have the pleasure! Great hike, probably moderate overall, lots of fun!

It is quite a hike to get up to these rocks but worth every single step. It took us about 20 minutes to ascend with three stops to catch our breathe. Once at the top we marveled in the splendor of the Shenandoah Valley and Nelson County views. Going down was much easier!

BRING WATER. Parking can get crazy on the weekends so we had to park up the road and walk up. There are porto potties on site. We took the short way up long way back. The short way is 1 mile of straight uphill. Not for the faint of heart lol But the view is well worth it. From there you can choose to take the same way back or there will be a sign that says Appalachian trail and you can go that way. It's about 4 miles and not short. But it's a gradual decline as opposed to stairs. If you want to do the long way first it's off to the side of the parking lot. You choose which route you prefer. Great spot!

This is the spot to get a great view of the mountains in Charlottesville. While this trail is relatively short, .8 miles, it is still a challenging trail as it is very steep and the terrain can be unforgiving at times. It is not recommended to go when it has rained or when it's really cold as ice does form. Overall still pretty fun.

The hike to the overlook is .8 miles from the parking lot, but don't underestimate it! It's a serious climb. 800ft or so, and quite technical. You'll be fine in hiking boots, but you do climb through some rocks and some areas could be slippery. The trail is well carved out though. We had a group of 5 and took a few breaks on the way up. It took us about an hour each way, but quicker younger peeps can do it in 40 mins. It's definitely worth it when you get to the top! I recommend climbing down to the lower rock once you get there! Dog friendly for sure!
