The beginning of a beautiful trail but be aware (unlike us), check the road/shuttle to ensure they're open. Otherwise you'll be adding 4 miles to your hike and this can mess up your plans.
We did the River/Shadow trail and then backtracked to the PCT north. Originally wanted to get to Thousand Island Lake but we only had 2 nights.

Pretty spot to watch sunset from since in the valley its mostly trees blocking your view! If lucky some horses may wander your way too!

We got so lucky because they opened up the road on the day of our wilderness permit. This is one of many amazing trails in Eastern Sierra.

Amazing place if your looking into using a group of mules for your next trip the staff are friendly and knowledgeable. Plus it’s a great experience to see the animals and plus you can start the high trail there as well.

Just did a Mammoth Lakes backpacking trip from Agnew to the Thousand Island Lake. Day one we ascended 8.5 miles over 1500 vertical feet of mosquito infested forested mountains. Tough hike but worth it, it had the right number of people, enough to feel safe but not crowded.

This area includes both the PCT & JMT (Pacific Crest & John Muir Trails. We were on both at the lake, gorgeous at 9800 elevation with views of the Mt. Ritter and Banner. Highly recommend a swim after a hot day getting there. Start early. Bring mosquito net, bug spray, water filters.

I am blessed to have seen Ansel Adams Wilderness.

Wonderful hike to Shadow Lake. Spectacular views. The hike takes about 4 hours out and back and is moderately strenuous.

What you would expect in a trailhead. All the anticipation of a great trip without the reality of blisters and sore muscles.
