Dania Memorial Park

This cemetery was platted by George Pratt in 1909 when this area was part of Dade County. Many of the pioneers came to this area from Wisconsin to be tomato farmers. Since they were of Danish heritage the city was named Dania. While reading about the history of Dania I saw a YouTube video of Fred Beneby speaking about the West lawn cemetery across the street which led me here..

Many of Dania's earliest pioneers are buried here. The cemetery was initially integrated but in the 30's and 40's anyone who was black was removed and interred in the cemetery across the street. It was a sad part of Dania's history and the town had since made it known that they regret that this happened.

This cemetery has graves dating from all of the wars. In the very back of the cemetery I found the oldest graves, Some marked CSA for Confederate veterans from the Civil War. A little known fact, cemeteries are great places to bird watch and I saw many birds enjoying the large ficus trees here. If you interested in history there is a lot of it here among the oldest families of Dania.
