Sangamon River Forest Preserve

I love visiting this park/nature preserve while the wildflowers are still in bloom. The end of that season is quickly approaching but there was a wonderful abundance (especially of a couple of varieties with yellow flowers) on display today (8/24/2022).

The Sangamon River Forest Preserve is beautiful in fall. We came here to check out the gargantuan ash tree that had been mentioned somewhere on the internet, and it did not disappoint. Great varied trails; the same continuous one took us through a prairie, woods, and near the river. Have fun playing catch with the Osage oranges that fall on the ground!

Well maintained paths, clean restrooms, and plenty of places to stop and sit. Would be a great place to take Senior pictures or engagement pictures without all the people at other similar parks like Meadowbrook or Homer Lake.

A delightful place for a stroll. Be aware that portions of it flood after high rainfall events.

A superb place to walk this time of year. The prairies are teaming with butterflies large and small. Asters add bright spots of color to a yellowing landscape, and bees crowd the goldenrod. The paths are well marked and beautifully maintained. What are you waiting for?

We had a great time! We heard owls, and saw cedar waxwings and indigo buntings. The prairie restoration is coming along very nicely, and the old open-grown oaks give some clues as to what the land was like at the time of settlement. The paths and signage are very well done. There were a lot of mosquitoes down by the river—be prepared.

Great spot for a walk with the dog along the river and through the prairie. Fairly easy trails.

Really fun place to explore, have a picnic, or view the river and descending creeks and streams. Very family friendly. Will go often.

Went to a bird watching event Cool preserve but watch for thorns if looking for the geocache

Easy paths, quiet and well maintained. Nice to spend a couple of hours enjoying the scenery and lots of information.

A hidden gem. Beautiful river, old oaks and restored prairie make for a lovely walk any season.
