This was our favorite museum of all the ones we visited in D.C.! The collection of art is impressive, however, we found the grounds and architecture of the house to be the real gem. So much of the property has been kept “original” and it is such a fun trip back in time. The grounds, even in winter, were beautiful and I can only imagine how pretty they are in summer. There is also a gift shop and cafe on site. Highly recommend making the trip!

What a beautiful place! What a beautiful collection! Peaceful, stunning, warm stories. And the gardens... ih my, the gardens! Maybe I lived there in another life because I could feel at home. Amazing place to visit in whatever season. It totally worth the visit.

This museum and the grounds are beautiful and fascinating! Ms. Merriweather Post lived such an interesting life and her collection is amazing! We're lucky she preserved so many historical items and made arrangements to share them with the public

Really glad we took the time to visit this place on this recent trip to DC. It's really hard to get everything you want to do done when going to DC especially in a 3-day weekend that's why this is been maybe our 5th or sixth time down. But we never seem to run out of stuff to check out and this was one of them. When you go to places like this make sure you take an a guided tour because you really don't get the full experience just walking around and taking in everything yourself. It's really nice to have someone explain the history and the meanings behind a lot of the items and other belongings that are within the mansion. Nice place to also explore the grounds and relax for a bit. Plenty to see and well worth the price of admission.

Loved it you can tour the mansion they have a greenhouse that had orchids and we were able to go to another Museum in the property that had over a thousand years of glass from crystals to glass jars from the Roman ages it was actually spectacular and we enjoyed the cafe they had price was reasonable and the food was excellent I definitely would come back here again cuz it was so hot that I didn't get to go throughout the whole garden they had formal Gardens cutting Gardens that we just touched on the edge even a beautiful Japanese garden with waterfalls we spent almost 4 hours there and we did not go through everything this is definitely a whole day Excursion but then I have to admit I love to take my time looking through all the beautiful antiques and Museum pieces. Even my son-in-law enjoyed it and that says a lot

Visited Hillwood with a friend to see it decked out for the holidays. Besides the lovely interior, we particularly enjoyed all the Christmas trees, the dress sculptures, the spectacular orchids and lunch in the restaurant. Highly recommend!

Amazing place to visit in any season! In spring the gardens are colorful and fragrant and their Christmas decor in November/December is sparkling! Highly recommend taking the included tour of the mansion.

We absolutely love this place ❤
In the museum you can see a lot of different things from the era of Catherine II, things were bought at an auction in the Soviet Union. We saw Faberge eggs, cutlery, carpets, paintings, icons, jewelry, crockery and an incredible house museum.
Also, in the museum there is a beautiful gardens with various plants, accompanied by architectural structures. The Japanese garden is just amazing.
Moreover, the museum has a greenhouse of all exotic plants and most of them are orchids.
We will dedicate this place again and again 👍🏻

Very beautiful property.
The gardens are heaven . They also have a conservatory where you can see more exotic plants .
The mansion is luxurious and a piece of history as well. Most of the interior is decorated with Russian artifacts and paintings of different personalities.
You will love a visit here and is not pricey

Stunning! I went over the spring for mother/daughter day and returned in the fall to actually tour the mansion. Really cool to walk around (you could leave me in the japanese gardens), though I don't know if it would hold the attention of children.

The estate has delightful gardens and a greenhouse with gorgeous orchids. The rooms and collections in the mansion bring you back to the times when great wealth was present. Our favorite was the impressive dining room. There is also a gem, a cafe that is surrounded by charming gardens. The service is friendly and the food is outstanding. The tuna was seared to perfection, the grilled chicken was flavorful, and the quiche had a good balance of veggies and cheese, creamy but not too heavy. Overall, you can have a wonderful experience at Hillwood.

Such a hidden gem! Highly recommend a visit to this beautiful house and estate - especially in the spring. The gardens are absolutely stunning.

The greenhouse has gorgeous orchid varieties and the Japanese garden has a great water feature. Could easily spend 2-3 hours seeing everything.

Hillwood is a lovely, calm oasis in the hubbub of busy Northwest Washington, DC. 25 acres of woodland and formal gardens, including a rose garden and Japenese tea garden. The mansion allows visitors to step into the glittering world of one of America's first wealthy, successful business women and philanthropists as this was the home of Marjorie Merriweather Post, of Post cereals and General Foods.

There is a voluntary donation for entry, plenty of parking and a tremendous shop. The Cafe is a welcome retreat for a delicious snack or lunch.

Closed Mondays. Open 10 to 5.

It's hard to believe this place is in DC - you feel like you are in the country. The gardens and mansion are just a joy to explore.

Tour the beautiful house & grounds donated by Marjorie Post - heiress for General Foods.

Recommend check out the various walking paths in addition to the main house, which is home to Faberge egg! Also many British & Russian Imperial pieces collected during the early rise of Soviet Union.

Located just outside of DC center. Google map directions were spot on, keep going - even when you go through residential neighborhood immediately outside of the estate grounds.

Parking is fairly limited, but very well organized by the staff. We were met at the gate & separately guided to a specific parking spot by a secondary attendant.

Small suggested donation per person is recommended, to help the volunteer staff keep this jewel open for public viewing!

What a delightful estate tucked away in DC! The gardens were absolutely gorgeous in early spring as many plants and flowers were in bloom. Despite coming on Mother's Day, the crowds were manageable, and we didn't feel like we weren't able to spend time enjoying the different gardens as we strolled the grounds. There is an impressive variety of orchids in the greenhouse. There is food available on-site, although we did not partake, as well as some parking. If you're interested in making multiple visits across the year, consider becoming a member (it is tax deductible).

Wonderful place to visit in spring or autumn for the gardens and the collections. It’s like a time capsule!

Only a 35 minute walk from Woodley Park. Very close to Van Ness metro stop on the Red Line. The Hillwood estate is absolutely gorgeous and deserves some recognition. You can learn about Marjorie Post (one of America’s greatest businesswomen) and her business savvy ways via the Post cereal empire and more. There is a small donation recommended at the entrance where you get a sticker and a walking tour map. The greenhouse and grounds are immaculately kept and create stunning views. The orchid selection is the largest I’ve seen - possibly larger than the Smithsonian’s! There is a cutting garden, a dog cemetery (which is actually quite peaceful), and the Japanese inspired garden. The flowing water and abundant trees easily makes this spot my favorite. Another (literally) hidden gem in D.C. that I think gets snubbed by the downtown tourism hype. If you’re visiting D.C. and looking for something chill to do off of the mall, check this place out! There is also a cafe with food and drinks on-site.
