South Fork Saloon

First off, Kenneth is a national treasure. As we were walking in he and his toothy grin asked us if we were there to see the band. We weren't, but we were pleasantly surprised when the band played us a custom rendition of Sweet Home Alabama. Our best night in Montana by far! Anyways, hope Kenneth was able to get up the next morning and dig them fence posts.

If you're waiting for your wash cycle at the laundromat at the Cenax gas station in Coram, Montana, you might wander into the South Fork Saloon in nearby Martin City. Martin City is poorly named. With only seven streets (conveniently named first through seventh street), it's more accurately a neighborhood than a city or even a town, but then matters of scale are different in Montana.

While you're taking in the ephemera on the wall of South Fork Saloon, if you're wondering about the t-shirt on the wall that reads, "I survived the shooting at the South Fork Saloon, 1994," the bartender will likely direct you to Donnie. Donnie will happily tell you all about the Baker boys' ill fated run-in with the law, which ended, mercifully, with the some bullet holes on the siding of a neighbor's house as the only casualty, and the Baker boys' spending a few years in jail before resetting, without further incident, back on sixth street.

South Fork Saloon, and Donnie, are one of the myriad pleasures of Northwestern Montana. The praises of Glacier National Park are well documented, accurate, and unequal to the actual experience of recalibrating of your own significance. This recalibration inevitably takes place, somewhere between your neurons and your soul, when your round the bend and see the scale of the mountain vistas at the Highland trail with your own eyeballs. After three days of 12-mile hikes when the smell of your dry-wick shirts no longer qualifies you for the company of other humans, head over to Coram for the only laundromat on the West side.

At South Fork Saloon, the Anheuser Busch brand beers are cold and on-tap, and the food is all of the microwavable or not-for-individual-resale-but-this-is-Montana-and-we-do-what-we-want variety. And if you're wondering why you can't get eggs rolls locally, one of the local patrons will be happy to share his views on the socioeconomic downsides of socialism. Whatever your political leanings, the pint of Shock Top will be the best one that's ever relived your Nalgene-weary palate, and when Donnie tells you that Martin City is the best place in the country to raise kids, you'll consider, for the moment whether he might be right.
