Checkerboard Restaurant

Gotta love the place. Decorated throughout with antiques from early settlers and Old West. Waitresses had cowboy hats and six guns. Had taco pizza and bacon cheeseburger pizza. Both very good. Menu had, sandwiches, appetizers, dinners, and salads as well. Service was fast and friendly. Well worth the stop.

So much to say about this place!
The owner, Karen, stopped at our table…such a sweet lady! Nearly 48 years in business!! She mentioned her husband did all of the remodel and she takes pride in their unique decor! Also gave us a plate of their amazing onion rings! They are a MUST! Pizza crust is homemade and a nice crisp to it! It was PERFECT!
Our sweetheart waitress, Bella, was so patient and helpful!
HIGHLY recommend! We will be back!

Great service!!! The server was very prompt and friendly. Pizza was very good. Prices are reasonable. This place is popular for a reason. Very busy with locals, as well as people from out of town. Worth the drive.

Great food. Ordered onion rings, Rueban Sandwich w/ waffle fries and a pizza. Onion rings were homemade and served fresh with side of ranch. Were very delicious. We ordered 1/2 order which was more than enough for the three of us to share. Sandwich was typical Rueban but was good. Pizza was delicious. Thin crust with lots of toppings. Overall, excellent food and service was just as good. Worth the drive to Pleasantville.

Absolutly love checkerboard. Good service good food. A must visit if youre in the area at all. Best ranch dressing in the country

We love going to Checkboard! Staff is always so friendly, Karen is always a hoot. Sarah is our favorite waitress and always does a wonderful job! Food is amazing every single time! 10 out of 10 recommend stopping if you are in the area!

This was my first time here and it was absolutely amazing and delicious! The wait staff was very attentive and the owner even came out and said hello and brought us our best ever shoestring onion rings with homemade ranch! All of the food was delicious and the setting inside the restaurant makes you feel like you're in an old western! Suggest going early as they're only open from 4:00 to 9:00 Wednesday through Saturday and we got there at 4:30 and by 6:00 there was a wait! Highly recommend!!!

Taco pizza was a real treat. Onion rings are a must. Family owned and operated. Very clear they put a great deal of heart into running this restaurant. Every wall seems to tell a story. I had a great time. I drove from Johnston Ia and with question I would make the trip again on a work night even.

I'm very pleased with this place. I had a pizza that was wrong & I've never had a place to make sure it was fixed right a way and with great service.
I love the food and the employees are so nice. I dont mind making sure I leave a good tip, they earn it. I will absolutely recommend this resturant.

Been going there for years. Excellent food and service! The onion rings or strings are the best I've ever eaten! Pizza is delicious, everything that I have tried is excellent! Service is generally very good and very closely monitored by the owners. Make sure you tell them if you have any issues. They have worked very hard to make sure they have good service or find out what was going on! It's a busy place on Friday and Saturday nights, so go early or prepare to wait for a table.

We arrived with a large party and, despite being short handed and slightly overwhelmed, the staff managed to get 8 pizzas and 4 orders of onion rings out and timed perfectly to the arrival of the remainder of the last of our party. The only hiccup came when ordering our drinks, which is typical considering that our party usually is 25 - 40 people. All in all I'd say that the staff went above and beyond and the food was delicious and we look forward to coming back.

Very good food with socially distanced tables. Nostalgic walls reminiscent of another era.
We started of our meal with highly recommended homemade onion rings which proved to be excellent. I had the fish dinner - 3 pieces of cod, choice of potato, roll & dinner salad - oh so good. Hubby had the Philly cheese steak hoagie with a side of steak fries - yummy.
Dessert was chocolate lava cake & peach pie ala mode - both were delicious.
Yup we almost rolled out of the restaurant as we were stuffed.
Very good way to spend our anniversary.

My husband had a pizza and gave it an A+. I ordered a ham steak and it was huge and tender! I had to bring half of my meal home. On top of that we had excellent service and great COVID compliance. You couldn't ask for a better place to eat!

I love this place. Great atmosphere. Friendly, competent wait staff, and best of all fantastic pizza and onion rings.
