We booked with kara-tunga one night in a hotel and three different experiences: boda-boda motor tour, village homestay experience and castlee keepers experience. The arrival at the hotel was not all that good, as we arrived after a long day traveling and driving, we're just arriving in Moroto we had a problem with the car. After waiting for the mechanic, we decided to eat something quick at the hotel and go to sleep and relax. As usual, what a plate of chicken cost at the hotel was 7 times more expensive than on the street, even though we were tired and we decided to eat there. Well, it was one of the worst decisions we made...
The staff was very friendly, even the girl who helped us, but it was impossible to understand between us. We ordered to eat two plates of grilled chicken, which was accompanied with fries. We asked in various ways and with different words if they could change the potatoes for vegetables, but the girl did not understand in any way what we were asking, even in the end some customers who were sitting close, laughed about the situation. Anyway, we ordered the chicken with potatoes and we sat down to wait, and so we waited for an hour. And when it arrived, it was very raw! We went to sleep angry and with bad feelings.
The next day when we woke up we went to have breakfast, it must be said that in order not to make our experience late, the day before we asked for breakfast for 7:30 a.m. Well, at this time we were in the dining room, but not breakfast, which arrived at 8:10 a.m. So we had to start later with our planning... Luckily, at this moment our guide Lochorro Michael appeared, a very nice and competent boy, from this moment on things started to go well with kara-tunga.
We started with a half-day motorcycle tour of the Karamoja area, both he and his partner were very nice and told us a lot of things about the life and culture of the Karamoj people. The price was a little expensive for what the route was, but they made it really nice and fun. At noon we arrived at the hotel to rest and later in the afternoon we went with Lochorro to do the Village homestay experience and the Kastlee experience. It was really a very, very nice experience, the people were very open, friendly and radiated happiness. We slept in the Kraal, which was not very comfortable, but Lochorro took some pillows for us and left us a whole kraal for ourselves. It was an experience to repeat!

The next day we arrived at the hotel, had our breakfast and went to pay. There goes our last surprise with the hotel... We asked to pay by card, and the girl told us that there was a fee of 10 dollars, apart from what the bank charges you of course. In my life I had never encountered a commission like this, so we decided to pay in euros (cash). Well, luckily we had several tickets because as if they were trading cards the girl was saying: this one is not from 2015, this one is not that it has a black dot... anyway...

IN SUMMARY, OUR EXPERIENCE IN HOTEL STAFF WAS NOT GOOD BUT OUR EXPERIENCE IN KARATUNGA TOURS WAS VERY GOOD THIS IS FANTASTIC, THANK YOU LOCHORRO FOR MAKING US FEEL SO GOOD!

Best place to stay in Moroto. Would highly recommend travelling to the Karamoja area and learn more about the local communities. Kara-Tunga is the best starting place, with local guides and great projects to support and contribute to the Karamajong. We stayed in the ensuite luxury tents. Very nice and clean. Great food and very friendly staff (all being trained / went to the schools set up by Kara-Tunga). Highly recommended to stay here

We had a wonderful stay here in the kara-tunga lodge. It’s a region I would recommend to everyone travelling to Uganda. The mountain area is different then the other mountains we saw in Uganda (more beautiful in my opinion). They offer a lot of tours at reasonable prices. For example wedid a hike up the mountains with a local guide, which was nice. And the same day we went with another guide (Daniel) to the Karamojong people. It was a wonderful experience because it was still a genuine insight in how they live, and it wasn’t as touristic as the maasai tours in Kenya where it’s full of tourists. Our guide Daniel made this experience even more lovely with his humor, enthousiasm and knowledge about the tribes. He is also a karamojong so you know what he is telling, is genuine. We visited their villages and experienced their ritual dance, and danced with them. The day after this we did a tour with the boda boda (motorcycle) up to the tepeth people and drove through the karamajong roads with our guide Daniel again. It was such a fun experience, driving the boda boda ourselves. We drove until sunset with the local people laughing because they see a mzungu (tourist) on a boda boda. Daniel was again the perfect guide for this tour. It ended with drinking a local beer in of the villages watching the sunset! Totally recommend this and totally recommend Daniel!

Excellent hotel. The best in Morto. The rooms are comfortable, spacious and pleasant tents that are well closed against insects. There is a shower and attached toilet in the room. The staff are wonderful and provide great service. The hotel's restaurant is good with delicious dishes. And the breakfast is also excellent. Really recommended place.

such an amazing hotel, we decided to extend our stay. We did two tours with amazing guides Michael and Kristine! Greetings from Lokolon. Free filtered water refill to avoid plastic consumption, very good food and the service is super friendly. They have an interest in local development and it is reflected in the tours they do.

Me and my friend stayed here for 2 nights. We really enjoyed our stay here. We did a hike in mt Moroto and we visited the krall, both with a guide. The guide had a lot to tell about the places.

We stayed in the twin room, it has a warm shower (ask the staff how to turn it on before you take a shower) and the beds are good. The provide a bottle of purified water to reduce the waste of water bottles (yeah!). Fill in a form for breakfast the evening before so your breakfast will be on time in the morning. I highly recommend the pancakes.

Order dinner on time, it can take a little while. The pumpkin soup was really good, the samosa not so much (it wasn't crunchy). So the last night we had dinner in town.

I definitely recommend to stay at this place. The staff is very friendly and doing their best. And they offer a variety of tours.

We had a group of 6 stay at Kara-Tunga and we had the best experience. The staff was super friendly and welcoming. They were really accommodating, and even packed us lunch each day as we headed into the field. We will definitely be returning each year!

A very nice place both for short- as well as long-term stays!
First of all: People make places. And the team of Kara-Tunga is very nice. Ivan is the greatest person I've met in Uganda!
The rooms are clean and comfortable, only a bit small and noisy in the morning since the kitchen is nearby. Still, because of the service, the surrounding and the food it was a 5-star experience and a home away from home for me.
Thank you very much!

Amazing deluxe tent experience!

However, just bear in mind the hot water is from solar energy so if you come in cloud day, there maybe no hot water.

My husband suggests the white light can be changed to yellow light in the tent. The atmosphere will be much greater.

Theo’s Kara-Tunga is wholeheartedly recommended. We had a wonderful short stay at his camp in Moroto on our tour of Uganda. Theo is a wonderful person, who takes a real interest in his clients and is always willing to help. We are looking forward to his future ideas for travel expeditions in the region!

I booked my clients (2 separate groups) at Kara-Tunga, Karamoja Safari Camp and they loved it. One of the groups arrived late in the night but the staff made sure to wait for them and ensure that they settled in well and had their meal. Thank you Theo Vos and all the staff of Kara-Tunga.
