Wat Sangkathan is a Buddhist temple affiliated with the monastic sect of Mahanikaya. It is situated in the third precinct of Ban Bang Phai, Tambon Bang Phai, Mueang Nonthaburi district, Nonthaburi province. The temple grounds cover an expansive area of 25 Rai.

Historical accounts suggest that Wat Sangkathan, originally named Wat Sari Kho, was constructed during the late Ayutthaya period by skilled craftsmen following the artistic style prevalent in the Sukhothai era. The design considerations included the distinctive features of the revered Phra Buddha Sothon, a Buddha image renowned for its artistic craftsmanship in the U Thong style. Notable elements included the golden aura around the image, glazed ceramic tiles adorning the eaves of the old ubosot, and bricks used in constructing the main Buddha image and the base of the ubosot.

Over time, the temple experienced periods of neglect, leading it to become a semi-abandoned structure in the midst of an orchard. Despite this, local residents continued to visit the temple for merit-making activities, particularly venerating Phra Buddha Sothon and making offerings. Eventually, Phra Phutthajan, the abbot, visited the temple in 1968, and with the assistance of monks and locals, initiated the restoration efforts in 1974.

In recognition of its restored status, the Ministry of Education elevated Wat Sangkathan from a semi-abandoned temple to a fully recognized temple with resident monks on November 27, 1978. Subsequently, on November 7, 1979, the temple received royal consecration from His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej, marking a significant event in its history. The consecration included a spacious Viharn with dimensions of 40 meters in width and 60 meters in length. The consecration ceremony concluded on February 21, 1980, with the binding of the sacred boundary stones.

Wat Sangkathan stands as a testament to the dedication of the local community and the collaborative efforts of both monks and laity in preserving and revitalizing this historical and spiritual site.

This is an interesting temple, with a mix of modern architecture and hand carved wooden structures. Anyone that is in to meditation will want to visit, or stay. The temple is tucked away, up river from BKK, and is best accessed by river taxi, and then a short walk. This is an all day outing, because of the travel involved, but it is well worth the effort, if one has the time.

If you want to learn about Buddhism and mediation this is the place to do it. Surroundings are beautiful conducive to putting your mind at peace and enjoying a long retreat , if you have the time. If your planning to stay in Thailand a long time and your on a budget you can also rent rooms by the Wat for very cheap. Contact Puky for this info just go to the Wat Sangathan website and she can set you up

Best place to start your journey for meditation. Maybe not the best place for non-Thai speaker, but keen observers can still learn a lot from the practice.
