The Magic of Bangkok!
Railway Market in Bangkok is truly a hidden gem for any food lover or street market enthusiast. Located right next to a bustling railway track, this unique market offers a memorable experience like no other.
During my visit in February, the market was brimming with energy and vibrant colors. The atmosphere was bustling with locals and tourists, adding to the already lively ambiance. Strolling through the narrow lanes, I was captivated by the diverse array of food stalls, craft shops, and souvenir stands.
One of the highlights of Railway Market is its vast selection of delectable street food. From fragrant Thai curries to sizzling BBQ skewers, there was something to suit every palate. The aroma of freshly cooked seafood and stir-fried noodles filled the air, luring me to try every irresistible dish in sight. I couldn't resist indulging in some mouthwatering mango sticky rice - a true Thai delicacy.
Apart from the culinary delights, the market also offers an opportunity to witness an impressive spectacle. As the train approaches, shop owners hurriedly retract their awnings and move their produce off the tracks, making way for the passing locomotive. It's a remarkable sight to see how this bustling market transforms within seconds into a fully functional railway.
Navigating through the crowded market can be a bit challenging, especially during peak hours. However, it's worth the effort to immerse yourself in the local hustle and bustle. The shop owners were friendly and welcoming, always ready to guide visitors and share stories about their products.

A fantastic place to visit! We booked a tour on Viator and our guide took us to get the train which we rode into the market. This was definitely a highlight of the experience and we then walked back along the train tracks, shopping in the market along the way before watching the train depart and making our way to our next destination. It's amazing how well the market has integrated to the train tracks and how smoothly the sellers retract their stalls and set them back up as the train moves through. Would definitely recommend.

Thais built their market on almost everything. A market on a train track could be one of the best markets ever. This place is actually the last stop where the train is slowing down towards the end of the track which makes the market possible.

They should build more drinking stalls along the track where people could sit safely and watch the train while drinking.

Other than watching the train, we probably do not care about what they sell, but I found the souvenir sold here is one of the cheapest in Bangkok.

During 11:10am and 14:30pm train arrival timing could be the best period to come.

A new experience if you've never experienced it. It's a highly touristy place and the items to be purchased are neither attractive to locals nor foreigners. Go get the coconut drink though, it's nice. The sellers some are really rude, of course understandable since the tourists don't want to listen and prefers to be run down by the train. Anyways, see it once and will never go again...

See one of the oldest market in Bangkok, operating on coal-fired train tracks. Enjoy the loud toot toot of incoming trains as you watched immensely the skills of store owners rolling away their tents and keeping away their goods to make way for the train. Good experience!

Around 1.5-2 hours away from Bangkok City Centre, both the market and train station are worth visting despite the long travelling time. Not a lot of market allows a train through the heart of it.

Invited Japanese customers who just came from Japan a few days ago. They were so surprised at the high quality of facilities, service and jet ski bike!

Amazing Experience. Was worth a visit. Train passing through the market and market adjusts the path for it to pass is stunning. It's like clockwise. Awesome

Great experience in meaklong station and train market. Able to get close to the train and how the local reacts when the train comes and goes.

Ensure to get the timing right and to look for a spot early to get the first hand experience.

I enjoyed getting outside of Bangkok and the Railway Market showed how people outside of Bangkok live. The train ride was fun and gave a glimpse of how life outside the big city is for the rest of the country. Such humble people that always share a smile.

Interesting experience, they way it work is completely different to my experiences.

The prices where fair, but the products where the same we have been seeing during this trip around Thailand.

Never the less was a fun experience and we also bought some stuff to bring back home

It's a unique market situated on both sides of the railway tracks, perfect for tourism. The weather might be a bit hot, so wearing a hat or a cap would be helpful when exploring there.

"Train Market" is a renowned tourist destination in Samut Songkhram Province due to its unique location right beside the railway tracks. Vendors set up their stalls along the tracks, swiftly retracting their goods when the train approaches. This distinctive setting has made it a fascinating and bustling attraction for global tourists.

Established in 1901, the market initially comprised stalls by the railway. In 1984, it expanded onto the tracks, hosting around 250-300 shops. With eight train passes daily in the past, it's now reduced to about four. The market buzzes particularly during specific times aligning with train schedules—typically around 6:30 AM, 8:30 AM, 11:30 AM, and 3:30 PM.

Vendors use cloth canopies as makeshift umbrellas, replacing the traditional ones. The market is famous for Maeklong's unique mackerel, known for its distinct taste and appearance, drawing visitors who wish to experience local flavors and buy souvenirs.

Beyond the Train Market, Samut Songkhram hosts other notable sites like Wat Bang Kung, the Amphawa Floating Market, nighttime firefly boat tours, and the Thai dessert museum, all easily accessible via various transport options.

The Train Market's cultural richness and its surrounding attractions make it a must-visit, easily reachable by public transport or private vehicles via Highway 35. It's a charming way to preserve and experience our beautiful traditions and heritage for generations to come.

Another “tourist attraction” - take it for what it is. We travelled on the train inwards, which was great fun (albeit a bit stuffy and crowded but the carriages do have fans). Cheap fresh coconuts to cool you down. Overall incredible experience seeing the train travel through the crowds and the markets.

Amazing experience riding a train through this street market.

So many different vendors selling souvenirs, food and drinks. I especially enjoyed freshly made fruit juices and slushies, delicious and absolutely refreshing.

You should definitely visit this place, especially that it is open on all the week days and it's actually not too crowded with tourists then (weekends are absolute madness!)

Hope this helps 🙏

Hot hot hot remember to bring a bottle of water and a hat. Don’t forget to put on sunscreen otherwise you might get sun burn. Very interest and traditional market. I love this market a lot. You can also wave goodbye to the passengers on the train and most of them will wave back, so much fun. Highly recommend it.

What an experience! Got there just on time for the morning train on a Sunday.. it was super crowded in the beginning. The trick here is to venture deeper inside where the crowd is less and you get a good place to and watch this spectacle of an event. A must visit place in Bangkok and its worth the one hour travel from the city.

This is a very nice market. Train coming through this narrow track and vendors moving away is a different experience. They have lot of food options too.

Great morning out, lots of stalls and trinkets, plan ahead and check the timetable, get there early and find the cafe near the end and sit and have a drink and some food and wait for the train!! And if you drive and park there on the street it cost us 40 Baht and they leave a ticket on your window! (Word of advice take a photo of the ticket up close and of it on your car as when we got back the ticket was missing and they tried to charge us for parking again! But I took the photo and showed them!!!!)
