Museum of African Art

Overall, it's an interesting museum. The entrance fee is 300 dinars. There's plenty to see and read. You can watch a television recording from 1989 about the same museum on a tablet fixed to the wall. It seems not much has changed in the museum since then. Generally, it's better to take a guided tour for a more engaging experience. By the way, tours are only available on Sundays and require advance booking.

Museum of African Art is situated in a quiet residential area. They organize exhibitions, concerts and other cultural events, as well as art workshops for children and senior citizens. A hidden gem and a great place to visit.

Small but super interesting museum on African art, as its name so directly suggests. There are many masks, equipment, and some music instruments. Especially masks and sculptures though. English translations were provided for the most part. Very nice addition to the city’s museum landscape, with a reasonable 200 RSD fee.

Really worth visiting it! In beautiful part of Belgrade, called Senjak, among parks and villas. Quiet street, nice to walk to. The museum is not big, but has a lot of figures and statues to offer. Nice story behind it all. Less than 2e ticket.

The Museum of African Art is the first and only museum in the region entirely dedicated to the cultures and arts of the African continent. According to specialists in the field, objects in the Belgrade Museum form a representative collection of African art.

The Permanent Display is based on significant examples of, primarily West African art and includes selected objects from the collection formed by the founders of the Museum – Veda Zagorac and dr Zdravko Pečar. Besides the Permanent Display, through Temporary Exhibitions of traditional African artefacts, the Museum also conducts its research on, and presents through different topical analyses, other cultural areas of Africa: Ethiopia, the Maghreb, Central and South Africa. The possibility for curators to expand their field of research outside the principal collections is in part directly linked to the collaboration which has over the years developed with local and international collectors and benefactors.

An important aspect of Museum work is publishing, which is based on the regular publication of exhibition catalogues, monographs, texts and articles by African Studies experts and professionals, as well as the “AFRIKA: Studies in Art and Culture” journal.

Another field of work for the Museum are visiting exhibitions: both hosting and travelling outside the MAA space into new display spaces and among “new” museum visitors present a challenge and a reason to use every possible chance to organise exhibitions and programs in the country and abroad.

Besides exhibitions, the presentation of the cultural heritage of Africa is achieved at the Museum through popular programs such as the Afro Festival, AFRAM and Coloured World which, through lectures, film screenings, art and music workshops, thematic evenings and concerts – expose the richness of African creativity.

For forty years this institution has made a significant contribution to promoting and fostering cultural relations and encouraging the principles of multiculturalism and cultural diversity. Endorsing the importance of African and non-European cultural and artistic heritage in general is the foundation upon which the overall work of the Museum of African Art in Belgrade is based.

One of the most interesting museums in Belgrade as they are very active with educational and cultural programs.

Great place to go to, chill atmosphere of the surrounding area. A large spacious area outside, and the exhibitions in the museum are very original and nicely presented. Also a very cool piece of this museums tradition is its anti colonial and non aligned roots, which is showcased by the fact that all of the artefacts in the museum were gotten ethically meaning were either gifts or fairly bought directly from original owners.

As a Yoruba-Nigerian myself, I was impressed by the Anti-colonial gallery initiative at the Museum! Accessible, Intuitive and pocket friendly.

Beautiful collection of African art

Last week we took the children to the ‘African Art Museum’. We had a lovely time looking at different African Masks. The children saw a variety of masks. Long masks, short masks and animal shaped masks. After exploring different African masks, the children made their own! Check out their work! Thank you for a wonderful time!

It feels so good to find our African heritage in such a land far away from home that are actually not stolen or taken away. Indeed Serbia is a great country

Beautiful and informative collection of gifts from several african peoples to the museum. Also a monument to the the anti-imperialist approach of Socialist Yugoslavia in gathering these items.
