Awe inspiring.
The grandeur is breathtaking. If you like architecture and roman artifacts you will love this place.

This archaeological structure has scientists stumped. They cannot seem to agree on its age, civilisation, architecture influence and its purpose. To my limited eye in this field its structural remains scream of Mayan influence with, Roman style villa layout. AMAZING

Amazing, just have to imagine!

This is worth stopping at if it is along your route. The history of this place is so interesting and the fact that it still stands since the 1100s. If you appreciate ruins and abandoned structures you will love this.

The ruins here are unique and the grounds are being excavated. It is worth the drive and the walk to imagine this building and the village.

Centum Cellas is dated IAD, build by the Romans is quite impressive how this 2 storey building is still standing after 2000 years. Simply beautiful

Ancient Roman Construction

A Torre Centum Cellas antigamente também chamada de Torre de São Cornélio é um curioso e singular monumento lítico situado na freguesia do Colmeal da Torre, concelho de Belmonte. Actualmente as ruínas, têm, despertado as atenções de todos, suscitando as mais diversas teorias e gerando-se à sua volta as mais variadas lendas.
Umas dessas tradições refere que teria sido uma prisão com cem celas, daí derivando o nome Centum Cellas, onde teria estado cativo São Cornélio, razão porque também é conhecida pelo nome de Torre de São Cornélio.

HISTÓRIA
No contexto da invasão romana da Península Ibérica, a villa seria de propriedade de um certo Lúcio Cecílio (em latim: LVCIVS CÆCILIVS), um abastado cidadão romano, negociante de estanho (metal abundante na Península Ibérica), que a teria erguido pelos meados do século I. De acordo com os testemunhos arqueológicos, foi destruída nos meados do século III por um grande incêndio, e reconstruída posteriormente.

Na época medieval, sobre os seus restos construiu-se uma capela sob a invocação de São Cornélio, que as lendas associavam ao local, mas que caiu em ruínas e desapareceu por completo pelo século XVIII.

É possível que no período medieval a estrutura de Centum Cellas tenha tido algum papel na consolidação e defesa da fronteira oriental do reino de Portugal com o de Leão (ficando, v. g., na mesma linha de defesa que a Egitânia e a Guarda, fundada em 1199), tendo inclusivamente recebido foral de Sancho I de Portugal em 1188, onde surge referenciada como Centuncelli. Assim o parece ter entendido Pinho Leal ao referir que, na passagem do século XIII para o XIV, a torre teria sido reconstruída para servir de atalaia, enquanto os restantes anexos caíam em ruínas (Portugal Antigo e Moderno) – tese atualmente considerada como improvável. Em 1198 a sede do concelho foi transferida para a vizinha povoação de Belmonte, conhecendo Centum Cellas, a partir de então, um lento processo de declínio.
