Restaurante Varanda do Casal

Beautiful, elegant, yet unpretentious restaurant overlooking the entrance to the schist village of Sao Simao. Menu items are family style, being quite large. We ordered the soup of the day, which was a delicious refreshing strawberry gazpacho and the vegan plate, a chickpea curry. Everything was really delicious. Very attentive service

We thoroughly enjoyed our meal in this place. We went on a sunny Sunday in winter and got in just before it started to get busy. We hadn't reserved but managed to get a table on the balcony. The food was delicious. We had oxtail casserole with plums and chestnuts and a salad - it was something special. The desserts and wine were good too. The staff were very pleasant and the whole atmosphere was very relaxed. Yes, it's pricey but it was worth it in our case.

AMAZING experience. Super recommend this place to come for lunch/dinner after visiting Coimbra. The best food experience we've had in Portugal so far. The owners are very welcoming and friendly. I recommend to pair the delicious local dishes with the wine. 10 stars.

I discovered this place thanks to Google maps, reviews were very positive so as on Tripadvisor. We went there with the family, and discovered typical Portuguese meals, delicious and affordable, I had one of the best meat ever perfectly cooked. The place is also awesome with such a great view on the nature all around. Service was perfect, English is very well spoken by the manager. I strongly recommend this place.

Me and my girlfriend had a great time at this restaurant, the staff was super nice and the food was amazing, and the view of Casal de São Simão is beautiful. A really nice place to take you plus one or your family and have an incredible experience.

This was unexpectedly one of the best meals, and restaurant experiences, we had while visiting Portugal. It is a hidden gem in Casal do São Simão, one of the stops on our schist village exploration. At first glance the food choices were daunting, but every dish we ordered was absolutely amazing! The migas that came as a starter was so good, along with the olives, bread, and jam. Our table ordered the oxtail stew, the roasted venison, and the peanut butter curry. Every dish was delicious and there was plenty of food to share! The service was great and our waiter went out of his way to explain each dish to us and to ensure that gluten free options were clearly explained to us. I would highly recommend this restaurant and will definitely be back when we return to do more exploring of the area.

We ordered asparagus consomme, deer with mushroom, we had no idea what it would be - chunks of tender meat arrived on a bowl of cabbage, beans , mushrooms etc. The food was so tasty and the service was excellent. Not typical portuguese prices but well worth it, we will definitely return.

This is an amazing restaurant! Great food, really good service and they also have everything for small children, including high chair, cutlery and bolws for the food as well as a place to change diapers.
Please note, that this is not some tourist snack bar, but a real restaurant with a high class menu. Definitely recommend!

On a wonderful day with two wonderful friends we decided to eat at Veranda do Casal. Been 11 months, as a regular and fan of veranda time to give it another try. We enjoyed the warm welcome, a traditional starters deal and bread and olives, some good water & wine to go with the fish in oil under a layer of mushroom crunch, patata's in the oil all from the oven accompanied by some fresh veggies and than the famous dessert.. loved it! Keep up the good work. H

First I like to say that ‘going to this beautiful restaurant and location is always a pleasure’. Things have changed, life is flux, happy for every one that survived time with covid! Been now twice since Veranda has a new chef & new prices and mostly the same menu served by the always friendly staff. The ‘Casal’ traditional food is good, but the new chef has to learn quick and I believe, chef could put a lot more effort in choosing, cutting up, spicing and preparing his dishes to serve food of Casal standards. Ill wait a while now, but be back and hope for improvement. Good luck. Hans

Lovely end to a short but thrilling hike to rhe Fragas de S. Simão. Food was sublime from start to finish, and the view from the balcony was breath-taking. Much less expensive than we initially thought, as each portion is enough for two people (as pointed out by the staff)

Excellent food, awesome desserts. Good service. The location is unique. If you can, get a table outside (and bring a thick coat).
