It was very interesting visit to an area with "old village " type of huts. Though the salt operations were not in process, we found souvenir shops opened. The best find was the old taverna portuguesa 1865 which is located in the same building with Loja do Sal. We bought a package of salt and a bottle of wine. The little kitchen was full of delicious aromas. A young chef cooked rabbit and lamb for lunch. We couldn't resist and had amazing food in the authentic village taverna. The dishes were generous and the prices - reasonable. Definitely, we are coming back and bringing friends.

Beautifully preserved village detailing the history of salt production in the area. Easy walking and a very interesting place to visit for a few hours.
Nearby hills provide further circular walks within the national park.
An easy day out location.

What a fascinating place!! We got a 'personal tour / explanation' from a great guy named Jose (sorry that I don't have Portuguese punctuation on my phone) whose family has been I solved for generations.
Documents dated 1177 show that this area has been producing salt since at least that time. Historical digs indicate that this has been going on since Roman times so maybe 1900 years!!!
We were here on a Wednesday (or Quarta-Feira in Portuguese) in early April and the place was almost empty. We were able to engage with some of the shopkeepers in our very limited Portuguese. Then, one young man stepped out from behind his counter (at Salarium) and engaged us in very good English. Being a slow day, he was able to give us his (mostly) undivided attention and a very nice lesson on the history and workings of the salt production here.

Well worth a trip, we will go back again to enjoy a meal at their family's restaurant (which is closed on Wednesday by the way).

The salt here is different from sea salt, it's 7 times stronger! You're able to see how it's made. Theres people working in the saline pools so feel free to ask any questions to them!

A nice place to visit, admire nature and (ancient) man's work to produce one of the best salt in Portugal. There's a few very nice restaurants, a couple of coffee shops and bars; and some little shops with traditional goods and delicacies

Interesting little wooden huts around the salt mines selling salt and local pottery. Solar do Sal has the best grilled chicken in the area. Always packed on weekends.
