There are two parts where to go. The longest is to the monastery by itself and the shortest, also fastest, is to the church. I went just to the church and from inside it looks very nice. The interior is amazing as many other important churches. Definitely worth visiting and having an imagination about the religion that is held over there.
Thank you🤩

This place is so stunning! All those details which you can catch with your eye or a camera! Great place for taking pictures. I highly recommend to come here right before the opening to avoid long queues. Even after high season there are masses of people.

This is a beautiful sight to visit, but waiting in line isn’t for everyone. From what I heard, even if you buy a ticket online, you will still wait for hours to get in. And the part that is available for tourists is rather small. On top of that when we were there, it wasn’t even a high season and the line seemed endless to me! So I admired it from outside only. I’m not sure I’d be ready to stand in line for so long. My friends were there in summer, bought a ticket online and still waited for 3 hours… in my opinion, it’s not worth it.

This is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and for good reason. The architecture, the scale, the details on everything, the beauty of it all... they are amazing and truly awe-inspiring. Even from the outside, you can tell this is a truly special place.

There's a lot to see here, so to be clear, you can go into the church for free, which was about a 5-10 min wait for us during the mid-afternoon (around 3pm). You can also go into the cloister, which is a separate line and requires a paid ticket. The wait for the cloister was about 1.5-2 hours at that point, so if this is a must see on your checklist, go early in the morning to minimize your wait in line.

There is zero shade anywhere close to the monastery, so the wait in line is with the full sun beating down upon you for the entire time. At least at Belem Tower, there are nearby trees where the kids can wait in the shade and they are still nearby while I was in line. Here, not so much. Just be prepared.

Perhaps the cloister is super amazing and worth it for some people, but I thought the church was pretty fantastic, so it's worth it to see that much at least.

A very photogenic monument both inside and outside.
The church is free and there is a separate queue for it. It's beautiful and worth a visit.
There is a charge to visit the cloisters. I felt it was a tad overpriced but it's very beautiful inside. It is not very large. The line seems to be quite long all the time. In Summers when it's hot best to be in the queue either early morning or late afternoon.
The tickets can be bought across the street.
The entrance is included in the Lisboa card

Absolutely must see. Beautiful stonework. Very busy so try to come at off peak times. The line moves pretty fast. Senior discounts.

This monastery is an absolute must see in Lisbon. The sculpture work around this building is amazing. There are so much detail and history that has been carved into the rocks of this building that is definitely deserves a careful look.

Well-managed crowds, incredible views, amazing stonework, and a gorgeous, free-to-enter chapel make this a true highlight of my time in Portugal. I highly recommend it, partially because, despite many tourists coming here, it's not too crowded and you'll still be able to have a wonderful experience.

The Jerónimos Monastery is a late Portuguese Gothic Manueline-style architectural masterpiece near Lisbon. Funded by a tax on yearly Portuguese India Armadas' profits, it was built in the early 1500s at the starting point of Vasco da Gama's first journey. It is the most prominent landmark in the Belem district and, along with the Belem Tower and the Monument to the Discoveries, is a must-see attraction in Lisbon. There are two lines: the right line is for viewing the cathedral's interior, and the left is for entering the monastery. It is advisable to purchase tickets online before arriving.

Breathtaking architecture. I'm glad we came. It was low season for me so there was no really wait. The only thing is the ticket booth to get tickets is some distance away. So best to locate that first before walking awestruck to the entrance of the monastery like I did just to have to turn around and go back.

You must visit this beautiful monastery if you come to Belem. The sculptures are delicate. It's a good place to take a lot of pictures 😉 the church next to it is free for entry.

Buy your tickets online ahead of time so you can at least skip the ticket line. If you don't purchase tickets ahead of time you have to wait both in the ticket line and in the line to get in. The line is long, but the Monastery is so worth it! Go early if you want to avoid the crowd, we went in the middle of the day and it was manageable though. We went through the Monastery first and then popped right into the church. The architecture is just stunning. Well worth a visit and long lines. My only note is I wish it had some more history or context to read while you're walking through. Despite this it is still a beautiful place to see.

Beautiful architecture. This monastery is just gorgeous. We spent our last day there before flying back home and I am so happy we got to see it. The architecture is just stunning.

This is another must-see in Lisbon. The Monastery is massive, with incredible architecture and a central courtyard. It is a UNESCO heritage site and it is not hard to see why.

I highly recommend getting there early and buying your tickets online. The queues are significant, particularly during high season. If you don’t want to wait in the queue, you can try to go after 1:00 PM as the crowds usually die down by then.

Visited here on a Friday afternoon around 1pm - tickets were purchased at the kiosk in the park across the road for 12€ per ticket.
Do not wait in the cloister line if you don’t have a ticket - watched some people wait and be turned away…definitely buy in advance if possible.

We hesitated going in since the line was 3/4 the length of the building but it moved very fast (waited 20-25 mins). Reminder this line does not get you access to the church & they only let a certain amount of people in at a time.

Inside, the masonry is breathtaking. Specifically the arches in the cloister. There’s separate rooms to explore with paintings, tomb of Herculano, some tiling…but otherwise that’s it! Impressive to see a structure that withstood the 1755 earthquake.

Although amazing to see, if you’re waiting in line for tickets & then in line to get in for 1.5hrs+ I’m not sure it’s 100% worth the time since it is smaller than I expected - just my opinion though!

Fantastic piece of history, very well-maintained, clean and preserved. Queues can be very long even during the week. If you are disabled traveler using mobility aids, the monastery is not accessible, there are many stairs. If you have an invisible disability , you can ask a member of staff to accompany you inside and avoid the queues. In order to do this. You must have a disability card or a proof of diagnosis with you.

Also note that queuing happens outside in an area that doesn’t provide any shade. You also have to queue twice; once for the monastery and once for the church. If you are able to handle the queues and can make your way inside, it’s absolutely worth it.

The ticket kiosk is across from the monastery in the gardens. You can also buy a Lisbo card in the kiosk next to it.

Totally worth it! Recommend to buy ticket in advance. Line seems long but goes really fast!

This UNESCO Heritage site is another Portuguese jewel everyone visiting has to see. It is possibly one of the best artistic structures (in cement and limestone) I have seen in my entire life.

The Jerónimos Monastery in Lisbon is a stunning example of Manueline and Gothic architecture, steeped in history and culture. Visitors often express awe at the intricate design and the sense of peace within its walls. The monastery, which was built in 1502 and inspired by Vasco da Gama’s voyages, is not only a monument to Portugal’s Age of Discoveries but also serves as a final resting place for many significant figures, including Vasco da Gama himself.
It’s recommended to set aside 2-3 hours for a visit to fully appreciate the site’s beauty and historical significance. Whether you’re interested in architecture, history, or simply looking for a tranquil spot to reflect, the Jerónimos Monastery is a must-visit when in Lisbon.

We were there in the morning and did not purchase tickets in advance online and had to spend 15 minutes in the first line to get tickets and then an hour in the second line to get inside. It is a cool place to visit with lots of history, but it is not worth waiting in line for hours. When we walked by in the afternoon, the second line was very short. So I recommend going there in the afternoon.
