Very nice experience. You can really have the opportunity to discover the past of Portuguese sailing and all kinds of old and newer ships. A lot of worldwide history and related warships. Also a hangar full of real size ships and boats. A must see for sure. It is an experience not seen anywhere else. Very nice museum and it is not crowded.

Excellent museum to visit. Loved all the models of Portuguese ships going back centuries. Then when you think you’ve seen it all, you get to walk around and above some of the actual ships of their time. You can imagine how the people who worked on the vessels lived. And at the end, there is a wonderful cafeteria and museum gift shop.

An absolute marvel to visit for those interested in history, the sea, geography, maps, and/or Portugal. You can follow the story of the Portuguese empire from its early naval exploration days to more modern wartime technology.

The collection of models is incredible though you should make sure to the full-size historical examples in the pavilion. There’s an expansive collection of historical navigation tools, cannons, weapons, and maps which tell a complete story. The museum shop has quite a collection, though it’s pricier than other souvenir shops.

A fantastic gem of a museum in Lisbon, especially if you're a naval or maritime fan. Fantastic models, displays, divided into chronological and category-themed sections, with informative guides, and well laid out. You can do the whole place at a high level in an hour or two, but recommend taking more time if you can. Jeromimos monastery is right next door and not too far from the Belem tower and the equestrian school.

Absolute must see attraction in Lisboa. The Portuguese maritime history is so vital to world history and is so well documented here. One will learn so much. The artifacts are mind blowing as are the model ships. Do not miss the statute of Archangel Raphael (4 photo with blow backing board) Amazing history of this piece. A+++++++

The maritime museum is a celebration of Portugese exploration and naval prowess and is next to the Jeronimos Monastery. The entrance is a bit confusing to find and is opposite the cafe/shop entrance, in an innocuous part of the monastery itself with two towers flanking the doors. Once you've bought tickets you're free to wander around and there are different rooms, each with their own theme. I found the first part fascinating and I really don't think the early Portugese explorers get enough credit for their achievements in cartography and discovering areas previously unknown to Europeans. We did spend quite a while looking at the map of the routes the early explorers took and the ships they travelled on were amazing, smaller than a river barge now! These ships carried small crews and sailed for months at a time through uncharted waters, quite incredible.
The museum continued on through the age of gunpowder to that of steam and then the modern era. There was also a couple of rooms devoted to the Portugese fishing industry, which I skipped. The modern era section was fascinating as I didn't know much about the Portugese African colonies or Portugese submarines. All of the rooms and exhibits had extensive information in English and after a couple of hours we were suffering brain overload but it was all so interesting! The final section showed the royal river barges and also some seaplanes which were quite beautiful. After our visit we had lunch in the museum cafe which was excellent value and gave us time to absorb what we'd seen before our next destination.

A fascinating look at Portugal's rich maritime history set out thematically. Most of the exhibitions are in part of Jeronimo's Monastery so there's another opportunity to see the magnificent building repurposed for ships. All the exhibits are labelled bi-lingually (Portuguese and English) and give a superb insight into the vast range of objects, maps, charts and ship models on display. The whole visit is capped off by the magnificent modern space containing smaller vessels, royal barges and aircraft. There is also an immersive av experience detailing the first transatlantic flight from Portugal to Rio. Finally, a good cafe and well-stocked shop rounds off the visit.

If you are a fan of nautical history this is the place to go. You will get a history of ship building and the exploration of the world to help you understand the history of colonialism. Many intriguing notes of the various ships, instruments and people who first navigated the globe

The Monastery is very beautiful and impressively large with a lot of carvings. We did a brief walking tour through several rooms. Our tour guide told us a lot of interesting facts about the life of the monks and how the different rooms were used.

This fantastic historical museum provides an excellent overview of the sailing exploration of alternative trade routes to India apart from the existing silk path. It explains the challenges the Portuguese faced and the innovations they used to secure the success of the campaigns.

You will learn about advanced ship structures to give tactical advantage in sea battles, canons that use sand and one of the first 400-year-old marine brigades created by the Portuguese people.

Although Portugal was the lead trader of enslaved people in their time, they were also the first to advocate the end of the slavery trade.

You will see a model of the king's room on his ship reproduced in the museum.

These are just a few things I mentioned, but I also think you will learn many more interesting facts.

Great exihibition, especially after the first 3rd (1st part just extravargant display of royal portugal men exploring the sea which was too heroic and neglectant of the local population from my POV) but otherwise very good explanation tables in English and it got better with every piece of exhibition, wonderful historical pieces (maps, ships small and life sized, cool metall canons and nautic equipment. Just sad, that some pieces were replicas because the original was in some other random museum in France, Germany or Austria... :( they should give it back, at the end on the first floor, there is a cool art exhibition

An amazing look into the history and culture of the area. I would strongly recommend it! There are place to sit and relax around the area with shade as well, so even if you don’t go inside, it’s a great place to rest, sit, and appreciate the beauty of the entire surrounding. It’s a quick walk to several major monuments in the area as well.

A nice place to visit. Great expositions allow you to explore Portuguese shipbuilding history. Families with kids were spotted, so I suppose it was interesting for them too. Highly recommend.
