Manila South Cemetery

In Metro Manila, it is not uncommon for some individuals and families to make their homes in cemeteries. These communities are known as "cemetery dwellers" or "cemetery residents."

The reasons for this vary; however, poverty and lack of affordable housing are often cited as the primary reasons. Some cemetery residents work in the cemeteries as caretakers or vendors of flowers and candles for visitors, while others engage in informal or low-paying jobs outside the cemeteries.

The social order that has emerged among cemetery dwellers in the Philippines, suggests that they have developed a system of social organization and cultural practices that enable them to adapt to their challenging living conditions.

From an anthropological perspective, this type of social organization can be seen as an example of human resilience and adaptation to difficult circumstances. It shows how people are capable of developing cultural practices that enable them to cope with their environment and overcome the challenges they face.

Having conversed with the inhabits of this cemetery it’s evident that that the cemetery dwellers have been able to create a sense of community and social order within their living environment highlights the resilience and creativity of human societies.

My poem to these survivors:

In tombs they hide,
Marginalized, cast aside,
Neglected by those who should care,
Forced to live in a place of despair.

A life of struggle, a tapestry of hope,
Resilience, like flowers that cope,
Adapting to a life so tough,
Bending but never enough.

Inequities have brought them here,
A storm that rages with no end near,
Yet their spirit remains so clear,
A beacon in the night that's dear.

In a world where justice is rare,
May we stand with those who bear
The weight of struggles and strife,
And work towards a more just life.

With that said the architecture of the cemetery is amazing, the stories of the dead tantalizing, and the greenery is a rare gift in the megapolis that is Manila.

The entrance is in the center of the west side.

Очень необычное место для посещения в Маниле(для желающих конечно). Южное кладбище, на котором живут обычные филипинцы в склепах умерших их родственников....трэш полный. Они ведут обычную жизнь, стирают вещи( как на фото) готовят еду там же, дети играются, купаются в надувных бассейнах. Всё как обычные люди , только на кладбище.....
