Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla

Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla was a Mexican Roman Catholic priest who is celebrated as "the father of Mexican independence" for his role in the War of Independence that ended Spanish colonial rule in Mexico. He was among the Mexicans who advocated for independence from Spain, racial equality, and redistribution of land.

On September 16, 1810 Hidalgo issued the “Grito de Dolores” (“Cry of Dolores”), the speech that effectively launched the Mexican War of Independence (1810–21).

In the fall and winter of 1810, Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla's rebellion marched across Mexico. Many of his followers abandoned him at Mexico City,and those remaining suffered a crushing defeat at the Battle of Calderón Bridge on January 17, 1811. Shortly thereafter he was caught, and on July 30, 1811, he was tortured and then executed by a firing squad.

In many ways he a lot like José Rizal he loved his people and admonished tyranny. In the name of friendship let the virtues of this man inspire the generations to come.
