Weaver is accommodating as she answered our queries. A 1-meter length of item is weaved in about 4-5 days. There are several stores which you can choose to buy products such as earrings, coin purse, table runners.

The Yakan tribe is one of the indigenous tribes from Basilan, a province in the Philippines. They are known for their excellent weaving skills of colorful and geometric designs. One of their Master Weavers, Apuh Ambalang Ausalin, received the National Living Treasure Award from Philippine National Commission for Culture and the Arts in 2016. She died on February 18, 2022, she was 78 years old.
The Yakan Village showcases the fruits from the important skill the women from their tribe are expected to learn and eventually master. Choose anything from clothing, Placemats, table runners, bag and purses. With the occurrence of Covid and social distancing, they also added face masks to their list of products. Usually, haggling is expected, but try not to, as proceeds from their sales help out the village a lot.

Enriching. Having a glimpse of how the women of this tribe pass on their knowledge and skills in weaving is something that all of us Filipinos should see. All of their creations are a product of creativity and love for culture and arts.
Some of the items you can find (which I also purchased) -dining table covers cost around 1k to 4k, placemat at 350 up and coasters at 80 up, headscarves1.5k to10k , decorative umbrellas, earrings and accessories 50php to 200, terno pantsuit cost around 20k, coverup around 1.5k up.
For the weaved cloth, you can have it framed or used as a wall decor.
Let us support our fellow Filipinos. The Yakan ingenuity and craftsmanship is something we can be proud of.

Yakans are an ethnolinguistic group from Basilan and also Zamboanga City. Thru a weaver's cooperative their traditional woven fabrics are available to the public and can be fashioned into various clothing and accessories. Was able to acquire some pieces which had the diamond design and floral design from the Yakan Village where the weavers and sellers are mostly female.

They have a few weaving stations you can see weaving demo by the Yakan women. This place was one of the sites we visited as part of the BIMP-EAGA Joint Tourism Development Cluster. Good way for visitors to contribute to the local economy.

I bought my yakan cloth wall display here. Apart from cloths they also sell items made in Zamboanga. I even met a real Yakan villager who once posed in a Mabuhay Magazine of our flag carrier. This is quite accessible from the city and near the sea/road.

Culture and diversity. If you are into supporting locally made goods this is one of the cheapest places because you get to buy it directly. Bonus you get to see them work

The weaving was one of my best purchases ever. Placemats purchased in 1985 are still in daily use - fabulous quality.

The stores in front are the commercial businesses. Stalls behind are where you will find yakan weavers and cloths. Interesting sellers if you interview them

One of the places in Zamboanga City tourist should visit. The villager are able to preserve their textile. The color and designs represent their tribe and culture.

It’s just amazing how these local Yakans (with the help of concerned individuals and authorities) preserved such amazing culture of weaving. The kids are helping their parents weave instead of just wasting the summer break for nothing.

If you're looking for unique souvenirs that Zamboanga City has, this is the right place for you. Balisong is my favorite.
