CampoSanto Yungay

Visited on Wednesday 2022.08.17. Get a guide. I still need to read up on this place to learn more about the 1970 earthquake and avalanche that buried the towns of Yungay and Ranrahirca.

Campo Santo Yungay is the buried town of Yungay, there are ruins of the church and a bus, however the rest of the town is buried in the ground from the avalanche many years ago. It is worth visiting as it is an interesting however also sad story.

Breath taking view with very sad story behind it.

The weight of the event on May 31, 1970 still reverberates here. Quite solemn, but an important part of Peruvian history. Well worth the hour it takes to tour the place.

These people suffered so much from the massive avalanche that so many people lost their lives. There is some little restaurant that have really good food. You do need 1/2 soul for the bathroom. The views are breath taking and the gift shops there have really reasonable prices. There are some poor people in the area that will ask for money and remember to be picky to who you give money to. Bring lots of water.
