I was here about 2 month ago ... very wonderful place with park and green nature
The city of Maastricht used to be a walled city during the 12th Century and the Helpoort is part of that archaic construction. Located in the city center, this gate which is also known as the Hell's Gate is named so because it served as a prison back then. The coal sandstone structure towers over 14 meters (45 feet) high and when included with the towers the height rises above 20 meters(65 feet). The architecture of this place is truly beautiful with its spiraling staircase and spacious halls transporting visitors back into history. This monument is open to the visitors every year from Easter Monday till the last day of October between 1p to 4:30p.

It is a nice historical port from really old times. Going inside was just an amazing experience, not for port itself, but because of the people that explains you the full history of the place! I learned a lot about Maastricht and history of The Netherlands! I was really impressed by that!

The Helpoort is an ancient city gate in Maastricht, Netherlands. Built in 1229, it's the oldest of its kind in the country. It's a historic treasure, but when we visited, it was closed, which was disappointing. This gate is a glimpse into the city's rich past, and it's a must-see for history buffs. It's sad that we couldn't explore it, but the exterior is still quite impressive. Hopefully, future visitors have better luck gaining access to this historic gem.

What a great place to visit. FABULOUS photo ops!! If you walk through the gates, just off to the right is a little doorway-takes you up into the tower and a small museum. The 2 gentleman there are quite informative!!
Great find!!!!

A small museum located on the second level. The entrance is on the right behind the gate house. Entrance fees applies €3 each. The museum is small with limited artefacts on display. But nonetheless interesting. The steps up the museum is narrow and do be cautious when ascending the steps.

As the Oldest City Gate in the Country, and served as a Southeastern Entrance to the medieval town Masstricht, Helpoort was built in the early 13th Century as part of the Fortification. Due to it had been used as a prison, the Portal acquired the name of "Hell's Gate". Well preserved, Helpoort is now a Museum. If you visit Maastricht, a Medieval Religious Centre, and also a Garrison Town, Helpoort should be on your sightseeing list indeed. A few photos as my recommendation.

A Maastricht landmark that’s not to be missed, even when the museum is closed. Very well-preserved and extremely recognizable. Don’t forget to walk along the remnant section of the wall stretching west into town for a true medieval-flashback experience.

Although small, it is free entry and is a great overview of the towns history and the wall
Covers right back to the Roman occupation of the area. Definitely worth seeing, one of the members was especially helpful explaining everything in English for us.

It's a very nice place and people who run it are lovely. They know so much about the story of the city. Plus, the museum, although little, is equipped with hi-tech devices.
