Museum Schokland

Very good little museum on the history of this former island. Great exhibition on how the island formed, from the Late Saalien to the formation of the Zuiderzee, and of how very hard life was on the island until the population was displaced.

Only thing missing was a little bit more information on how the Zuiderzee came to be.

This is a fascinating little museum of a coastal community now on a little hill in the middle of a field. For anyone who is amazed at the ability of the Dutch to reclaim land from the sea, this place is a must see as living evidence of what has been achieved. The great food and service at the restaurant is a reason to come here even if you are not interested in the museum!

Excellent, seemingly quite new museum. It makes the best of the difficult history of this place. The museum rents out bikes with which you can circle around the “island”. Very friendly staff.

I imagined this place when it was surrounded by water. A good place to remember how the early Dutch lived and fought with water.

Much more to be seen than I had expected! Interactive museum that delves into the history, from the ice ages, to the formation of the island, to its eroding and eventual evacuation. And of course the reclamation with the emptying of the Noordoostpolder. Fascinating story—truly something stranger than fiction. Highly recommended.

What an interesting visit. Great walk through museum about how a village worked and lived in bygone tomes. The shop was neat and the restaurant homely with great staff that chatted about their museum. Well worth the drive to visit there.

Undiscovered gem about Dutch history. Even as a Dutch person, this was new to me. Recommend renting a bicycle :)
