Funkenstein

I was staying for one night in nearby Hotel de Prince and went for a short wander when I discovered Funkenstein on March 20th 2019.
It was about 830pm on a Wednesday night. The bar was not too busy and I was greeted by a friendly member of staff. He helped me through the menu board which was in Dutch. I had a very tasty BBQ burger and chips washed down by 2 glasses of shandy. Very tasty.
There was a lovely old school atmosphere in the place and it was not too busy. Staff were excellent and I really enjoyed my food. I recommend the apple caramel dessert. All in it was €25. Try it!

Funkenstein is such a cozy and atmospheric place to sit! We got the kaasfondue with two people and were positively surprised anout the great variety of food that came with it. The fries are great, the cheese was on point melted and even when it was busy, the waitress did a great job. We will definetly come back for the burgers!

Food was really nice! Funkenschnitzel was super lekker. We only got one salad between two people but when we asked for a second salad, it was quickly arranged. Really nice place!

Nijmegen may be relatively unknown but it's certainly worth a stop. Lovely old town with a choice of restaurants. For me, this remains first pick for affordability, value for money and tasty food. The burger was among the best I have eaten - the addition of mango chutney was a revelation. Yes. It does work and I cleaned the plate. As well as the burgers, they have schnitzel and Thai green curry. The beer choice is extensive - with six beers on tap and a host of Belgian and Dutch bottles; a cornucopia. (They even have an English session IPA!) I tried three beers and was a very satisfied customer.)
So, if you are passing in Nijmegen, stop, book a hotel in the old town and enjoy. (Oh - should have mentioned the friendly, helpful and very busy staff.)

Very cozy place, super friendly staff and the food was out of this world, no cap. All that for a very reasonable price too. 11/10 would recommend.

Funkenstein has the best Southern California burger and Funky Schnitzel. Once you eat these, you'll be hooked forever.
