Ado Awaye Hills

The only suspended lake in Nigeria, Ado Awaye Lake, is a natural wonder worth exploring. Nestled within the stunning Ado Awaye mountain, this unique lake appears to defy gravity, hanging on the edge of a crater. The trek/hike to reach the lake is an adventure in itself, with breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. Once you arrive, the serenity of the lake and the folklore that surrounds it make it a truly mystical experience. There's ample parking space before embarking on the hike, However, there aren't any food vendors in the vicinity, but you can find them in the nearby town. Also, there is a ticket fee required to access the lake, and you also have the option to hire a tour guide for your exploration.

Before going to see the hill, i thought it would be a walk in the park. I was totally unprepared for how rigorous it'd be to hike for a first timer. You'll have to pay a token depending on what tour guide you meet available at the office attached a side away from the hill. I got 2 little boys who took me up the hill and helped carry my bag. The view up there is absolutely breathtaking and awe inspiring. I absolutely loved the experience but my body didn't thank me for it. It's advisable to wear hiking friendly boots as the man made stairs constructed stops after a while and you'll have to rely on hiking stick or a sure footed boot. P. S if you're carrying water/beverages up the hill to rehydrate, sip slowly as chugging will weigh your body down and make the rest of the journey up the hill very very tedious. P. P. S take your time climbing up, take breaks if you must so you don't end up winded. the descent down is more relaxed than the ascent up. Ideal time to go visiting would be September 25-27th (World tourism day)

It was a really intense experience! First, I we had to climb over 300 flights of crooked, uneven stairs, then we got to the rain-making rock. We also saw the tie and dye lake, and the famous suspended lake. There was a point where we had to slide down a slope with our butt (really scary) and a spot that one misstep would mean bye bye. In all, I met amazing people and had an exciting experience.

Ado Awaye Hills is a wonder of nature with breathtaking scenery. This is a tourist and adventurer's delight. The Hills are located in the villages of Ado and Awaye, 4 hours drive away from Lagos in Oyo State. The Hills have tour guides who relish visitors with the history behind the Hills. The Ado Awaye Hills is also the site of one of the only two suspended lakes in the world, the Iyake suspended lake. The ascent to the hills can be very physically demanding but exhilarating and it is an adventure worth taking.

The suspended lakes are :(1) The Suspended Lake in Colorado, USA and (2) The Ado Awaye Suspended Lake in Oyo State, Nigeria.

History From our tour guide : He said the mountain protected the people of Ado Awaye from their enemies during the war,They hid there for refuge and safety

However,The mountain is also known as The Oke Ado mountain by the people of Iseyin.

The mountain is believed to be a sacred place and the people of Ado Awaye pay homage to it yearly.

Infact,The mountain is also said to grant people’s wishes (the ishage rock) while the waters from the lake (iyake lake) cures barrenness(fertility issues).

You will have to climb 300 steps to get to the top of the mountain,then the remaining climb to the mountain is easy.

The Labdmarks on the mountain are

1.ISHAGE ROCK

A giant rock standing without support.The rock is said to have spiritual powers and people with certain wishes pray at the foot of the rock and most times send a white cloth to be tied around the rock to request for a wish.

Meanwhile The Ishage Rock will drop off the white cloth when its dirty.

The Ishage Rock is regarded as one of the most powerful among the gods on the mountain.

2. ESE AWON AGBA (FOOTPRINT OF THE ELDERS)

3. IYAKE LAKE

The lake is believed to have spiritual power for those with fertility issues.It is said that the lake has never dried up and it is a taboo to swim or bath in the lake.
It is believed that who ever swims in the lake will never be found again!
Our Tour Guide told us about a white man who came to the mountain with his friend to find out the depth of the lake with a the help of a chain ,it was said that the chain broke,the man fell deep into the lake and hasn’t been found till date.

4.THE ELEPHANT TREE

It’s a Tree with the resembles an elephant.
