The temple history dates back as early as between 1870 and 1880 in the 19th century.Since the relationship between the local Chinese are very warm with the Johor monarchy, Sultan Abu Bakar encouraged the Chinese to build their places of worship and for the burial by providing them land.[1] The temple was then founded by then Head of Ngee Heng Company led by Tan Hiok Nee.In 1981, the temple was proposed to undergoing renovation with the request was accepted in 1994 with total expenditure of RM1.5 million. The renovated temple was then completed in the following year in December 1995 with much of its cultural design are being preserved and important relics such as the century-old bronze bell, incense burner and wooden tablet remain.

Very friendly locals who will show you how to participate in worship. Try your luck at the Joss Sticks and ask Yes/No questions to the Deities with Jiaobei.

The Johor Ancient Temple was established around 1870 and is believed to have been built by Kangchu Tan Hiok Nee. The Temple belonged to the five major bang each worshipping their respective gods in the temple as follows: Zhao Da Yuan Shuai (Hainanese), Hua Guang Da Di (Cantonese), Gan Tian Da Di (Hakka), Hong Xian Da Di (Hokkien), Yuan Tian Shang Di (Teochew). The Yuan Tian Shang Di is the main deity of the temple. The temple has been taken over and managed by the of the Johor Bahru Chinese Association. It underwent a major renovation in 1994-95 at a cost of 1.5 million ringgit.

Not much to see but if you're a history buff or if you're visiting near Citysquare mall/Jalan Tan Hiok Nee, do visit this Temple. There's also a beautiful Hindu Temple nearby.

As this is a Religious Place, I will not take any photos of the inside as a mark of respect. This place welcomes everyone whether you are a believer or not. There are No Admission Charges, but a Small Donation would be appreciated.

If you are here to visit as a Tourist / History Buff, I highly recommend visiting the Johor Bahru Chinese Heritage Museum first. Google Map Link: https://goo.gl/maps/oE8QED58fxP8hYTU7

You will appreciate this Temple more when you visit the Museum first as there are alot of information and artifacts housed there regarding the History of this Temple. If I understand correctly, there are 5 Main Deities housed here, each representing a specific Chinese Dialect Group (Hokkien, Cantonese, Hakka, Teochew, Hainanese)

A quaint taoist temple in the middle of Johor Bharu city centre. A refuge and sanctuary for the faithful in the midst modernity surrounding.
Also a must visit for tourists.
