Definitely a 4.5, so I'm here to increase the rating.
If you have a microwave at home, please heat the pastries up, it'd be much better. Otherwise, a great place to find curry puffs, and I wish for it to open for a long time!

Unique bakery experience from the olden days. Staff mentioned the shop has been there for 80 years plus, amazing!

The loaf bread is amazing when toasted. It is the crusty type that goes super well with soup, or made into croutons. It will be splendid as 'roti bakar kaya' too, since it is the roti Benggali type. Photo shown after I turned them into garlic butter toasts (soup not included. Haha. You can only purchase baked goods there, no tables or cafe available).

Pastries like chicken, mutton and sardine puffs' crust are wonderful, just that the filling a bit bland for my taste. I do love the curry (potato) puffs tho, the crust is yummy and they put half of a whole small potato in, so generous!

The Suji cookies' taste are okay2 for me, but do have great crunch. The kaya buns I bought were quite dense in texture, not bad, but I supposed would taste great fresh and hot from the oven. Mine was already cold, so yeah, so-so only.

Overall, I would definitely come back for their loaf bread, baked in the traditional charcoal oven. If I stumbled across the bakery when the other baked goods like buns and pastries are still piping hot, I'll buy those too, for sure. My only hope for this bakery is they could bake their goods during opening hours so customer can be enticed by the smell of fresh goods. A soft and hot bread never hurts anyone too. Anyhow keep up the good work to the owner and staffs there!

Besides Hiap Joo, this is another traditional old school bakery in city area. Bought their coconut buns and potatoes samosa which is a small version of curry puff. Tasty old school taste, a rare find nowadays.

I like this old-times bakery a lot, and will drop by for curry puffs and breads whenever I am around. Lot of changes outside the store over these past 40+ years, but this bakery remains authentic and origin.

What more can you ask? 😍 Was planning to go to Hiap Joo but unfortunately it's close on Sundays. But you can always go here if Hiap Joo is closed! 😉

This is a bakery that still insists on using traditional charcoal grilling methods to make bread.
It can be said to be one of the oldest bakeries in the city of Johor Bahru. The bread made is very fragrant, the taste is soft, and the price is very cheap.
I especially recommend their red bean bread and shredded coconut bread.

Homemade bread baked using charcoal. The 80-year-old brick kitchen is still good. The bread is thick and soft.
